Zach Rodgers GRA 340 Jun 5, 2024 Module Four Activity Magazine Page Design Justification The first font I choose is Oswald, created by Vernon Adams in 2011. Oswald is designed to be used freely across the internet by web browsers on desktop computers, laptops and mobile devices. Since the initial launch in 2011, Oswald was updated continually by Vernon Adams un- til 2014. Vernon added Light and Bold weights, support for more Latin and Cyrillic languages, tightened the spacing and kerning and made many glyph refinements throughout the family based on hundreds of users' feedback. I choose Oswald bold because is very simple and easy to read san serif font. The second font I choose is Labrada, a typeface family designed by Mercedes Jáuregui. It expresses the communicative richness of the conversations and discourses of the indigenous cul- tures of oral tradition, at the same time that it dialogues with the classic forms to function in im- mersive reading texts. This project began in the Master of Typeface Design, MT-UBA, at the Universidad of Buenos Aires, Argentina. I choose Oswald because it has the aesthetic of indige- nous cultures while still being very simple to read. These fonts work well together. Labrada gives of the native American synthetic while Oswald works well for the bolder and larger parts of the aesthetic.
Explain the rationale for your design choices other than typography. Include the following details in your response: Explain why you selected the specific color(s) in this design. Describe how you have incorporated design principles in the design. If applicable, explain why you chose to use other design elements, such as shape. The colors I choose, red, blue, brown and black embody the native American culture well. I used hierarchy in the design. I put the tile in large font at the top, the subhead below and the body type in black font. I made sure the black font stood out against the brown background and made an ef- fort to make the quote stand out against the white box. I put the call to action in a big red font on the bottom to allow it to stand out. I did not use a white box because I dint want it to stand out as much and take away from the quote. Describe your process for selecting culturally representative imagery. Include the following de- tails in your response: Explain why you selected the specific image used in the design. Describe your thought process and key considerations while looking for and shortlisting the im- age(s). I choose a woman native American. The image is professional, clean and cartoonish. It works well for the target audience and matches the color scheme of the whole. The image portrays the emotions of confidence through this woman. Explain how your design aligns with the client's and target audience's needs and expectations. In- clude the following details in your response: Outline the client needs and objectives you consid-
ered while creating the design. Explain how you have aligned your design with the identified client needs and objectives. Outline the audience expectations and preferences you considered while creating the design. Explain how you have aligned your design with the identified target audience’s expectations and preferences. As stated in the design brief, “The Cultural Chronicles is an educational magazine dedicated to showcasing the vibrancy of cultures from around the globe. With an unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusivity, it serves as a compelling resource for inquisitive young minds. Each is- sue is a journey through the heart of cultural diversity, connecting the past, present, and future. We create engaging content that is relevant and relatable to our readers. Our mission is to bridge cultural divides and foster mutual understanding by celebrating the richness of human heritage through art, stories, and insights. Our magazine is designed to resonate with the unique interests and perspectives of teenagers. Through engaging content, we aim to spark curiosity, encourage dialogue, and inspire a lifelong appreciation for the world's cultural tapestry. Our goal is to help shape the next generation of informed global citizens.” I worked to make this image fun and re- latable to the 12-18 age range coming from families with minimal disposable income. The im- age, font and color scheme combined with the hierarchy and cleanliness of the image allows for the best results. I stayed away from cursive letters and used simple and bold fonts. Include image attribution for any open license imagery included in your design. If you select an image with people in it, please ensure the photo has a model release license.
