Iman Abudagga Zahid Husain Data and AI Lead 400260626 Microsoft Section C07 1. Summary Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform that offers a range of artificial intelligence (AI) software and services. The platform is designed to help organizations create models for Microsoft systems and provides a range of different servers for various uses. Microsoft Azure offers three different AI models including GPT-3 for generating and understanding text, Codex for generating and understanding code, and Call-E for generating images from text prompts. Iman later explained her experience and story of becoming a data and AI leader for Microsoft. She continued to explain the Azure AI subscription. They offer a subscription which comes with a pre-trained AI model that can be fine-tuned to meet a user’s specific needs. The platform has various uses and capabilities including content generation, summarization, code generation, semantic search, and end-to-end call center analytics. One customer example of using Azure AI software is Car-max who wanted to analyze their large customer base and understand what cars their customers were looking for. Using Azure, they produced 11 years’ worth of car summaries in a matter of months, enabling them to better understand their customers' needs and preferences. 2. Evaluation Microsoft is a global brand that is one of the most recognizable in the tech industry. I enjoy technology and was very pleased with the presentation and Iman herself. She used her time on stage to connect with the audience by telling us her story and how she has succeeded in the industry. Iman was also giving insightful and thoughtful answers to all the student questions at the end of the presentation. In addition to that, I liked the examples she drew of companies that have implemented and are using Azure AI currently. This allowed for me to get a full scope of how big Azure is. In addition, she also gave a great introduction to the product as I had never heard of it before. Overall, a very informative presentation and one of the three that really stuck with me. 3. Application Personally, I don’t think this presentation would apply well in a business or government setting. This was an informative presentation and an introduction to Azure technology. While we did receive an example of a company that had implemented Azure AI, there is no real business or government attachment to be concerned with in this presentation. For this to apply to a business it would have to include a segment as to how it would benefit them specifically, after all that is what they are most concerned with. Travis Nixon of Business Transformation says that companies don’t know where to find the data scientist who can handle the expertise the AI requires. They need to know the qualifications and talent required. 1 None of which are outlined in this presentation. 1 Travis Nixon National Director of Data Science and Travis Nixon, “The Good and the Bad of off-the-Shelf AI,” Microsoft in Business Blogs, May 1, 2020, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/industry/microsoft-in- business/business-transformation/2020/02/25/the-good-and-the-bad-of-off-the-shelf-ai/.
Adam Jones Zahid Husain Director of Finance 400260626 IBM Section C07 1. Summary IBM is a company that places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, recognizing that different worldviews and experiences are necessary to solve complex problems. The company has been using technology such as speech translation and other speech-to-text apps to communicate with team members across language barriers. IBM is also investing in cutting-edge technologies, such as "Moving to the Glass," which helps to source and process large amounts of data. They use this technology across almost all applications and work with SalesForce. Additionally, IBM has been working on developing a robot that can understand complex entries, which will save time in processing and is already being used by McDonald's. However, this technology could displace thousands of jobs in the fast-food industry. Adam then explained that IBM is also making strides in the tech industry with the first quantum computer set to go live this year. The AI technology is also being used in healthcare to help doctors input symptoms and find hundreds of journals and sources to assist with diagnoses. IBM is aware of the ethical implications of AI and believes that industries will go through self-regulations, much like any other industry. 2. Evaluation Overall, I found this presentation to be very insightful and informative. One of the few things that the presenter, Adam, did well was show us how IBM computers are being utilized in business environments in today’s business climate. Adam mentioned how remote work and the need for large data organization is becoming a bigger requirement amongst lead businesses in the technology industry. He mentioned how some large corporations like McDonalds have already begun using the AI technology to take fast food orders without human assistance. In the Q&A Adam did a good job addressing people’s concerns over Ai technology taking over human jobs, as was the example given in McDonalds. 3. Application I believe this would be a great presentation that would apply to businesses. Especially for larger companies who are looking to break into the latest technology. The McDonalds example help other businesses to see how AI technology can benefit them. The presentation itself touches on quantum computing and all the benefits that could arise from it, which is where I think this presentation also applies to government boards as well. Organizing large data files, advancement in healthcare research, and renewable energy focus were among the main points for what a quantum computer can do. In a Harvard Business Review Journal, some of the leading scientists on quantum computing stated that businesses can better optimize investing strategies, improve encryption rates, and discover new quantifiable data in fractions of the time, saving both time and resources. 2 IBM’s latest computers can benefit both government and businesses in equal parts. 1. George Chacko Zahid Husain Senior Director, Network Delivery 400260626 Canada Health Infoway’s Section C07 Canada Health Infoway is a federally funded organization that specializes in electronic medical records (EMR). They aim to digitalize healthcare and provide virtual care to patients. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, they have learned that virtual care is possible, and patients are looking for this service. Clinicians are also seeking access to patient health records, which is currently difficult to obtain. Infoway is on a mission to provide one national record accessible to all Canadian provinces. Infoway works with hospitals, clinicians, governments, and many other healthcare organizations to create a collaborative and connected resource center. They have implemented Prescribe IT, an electronic subscription service that is now available in all Shoppers stores. The service is available in seven provinces, including Ontario. Twenty-five EMR vendors have partnered with Infoway to go live. Institutions like Telus, Healthwatch, Intra Health, and Walmart have already implemented Infoway's plans. Infoway uses AI and machine learning to build their outcomes and goals. They also use big data and need for accurate and more updated algorithms to provide better healthcare. Infoway is working towards creating a more digitalized healthcare system in Canada, making it easier for clinicians to access patient information and provide better care. 2. Evaluation One critique I have for this presentation was that there were not many visual cues on screen for the audience to look at. Compared to the first two presentations I went to, this presentation lacked many on screen visuals which proved to be informative in earlier presentations. I also appreciated how George spent a good deal of time talking about how Infoway’s is making strides in advancing the healthcare field. Finally, George did a great job in the Q&A part of the presentation which further gave insight into how Infoway’s can and is being implemented into real world scenarios. 3. Application This presentation would apply nicely in a government setting. Canada Health Infoway’s is a federally funded organization. The presentation goes onto explain how PrescribeIT has been implemented in all Shoppers stores to assist in healthcare assistance. Healthcare is something that is handled at the government level and knowing how and why Infoway’s and PrescribeIT will help healthcare makes it so this presentation would apply for government use. The most important part of the presentation is learning how exactly to utilize Infoway’s into the medical scene. In a Frontiers public health blog post, Rashaad Bhayat who has worked in healthcare for over 20 years said that Infoway’s is a great tool for healthcare, but it has not properly been implemented and it is not properly optimized for enhancing patient care now. 3 Over time, as medical records shift online, Infoway’s will be a big part in getting that done. 3 Rashaad Bhyat et al., “Digital Health Value Realization through Active Change Efforts,” Frontiers (Frontiers, September 13, 2021), https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2021.741424/full.
