San Joaquin Valley College ELEC 121 Cost Estimating Activity Pedro V. Ojeda Overview Estimating the total cost of a construction job is an immense task, and one that requires industry knowledge and experience that would be difficult to convey in an introductory course such as this one. Yet there is equally immense value in an aspiring electrician gaining a basic understanding of how costs of a job accumulate. To that end, in this activity you’ll use a very basic cost estimation process to tally labor and materials costs to arrive at an estimate for a proposal to build a large shed on your neighbor’s property. This activity has three major sections: Labor, Materials, and the Bid Form. Labor The hours and number of workers are provided below. Use this information to calculate the quantity of hours each type of worker will require on this job. Worker Qty Hours Each Total Hours Concrete 2 6 12 Frame & Finish 2 16 32 Roofing 1 4 4 Electrical 1 7 7 Windows 1 3 3 Materials Below is a partially complete take-off list for this job. Research the costs for these items in the same way you did for the Materials Cost Activity . Item Description Qty Cost Per Qty Total Cost 80 lb concrete mix 50 $9.99 $499.50 2x4x96 lumber 80 $3.18 $254.40 4x8x½” (approx.) plywood sheathing 35 $15.98 $559.30 8-Penny Nails (1 lb) 10 $4 $40 Roofing felt (approx. 150 sq ft) 1 $32.98 $32.98 Roofing shingles (approx. 150 sq ft) 1 $39.47 $39.47 Cost Estimating Activity ELEC 121 Revised: 05.23 pk Academic Affairs Department
