San Joaquin Valley College CLO 3 – Basic Design Components [Mastery] Lab Overview A floor plan shows a building’s layout and serves as a reference for making many other types of drawings, details, and schedules. The floor plan is typically referenced when making electrical plans. When the basic floor plan is created the architect and electrical engineer can work together to design the electrical plans. The National Electrical Code has minimum requirements that the engineer must follow as they design the electrical plans. This includes and is not limited to the load calculation, panel schedule, electrical items used, and the maximum distance the items can be installed. In this course you have a chance to practice this process through the Home Project , creating a basic electrical plan of your home. In this Mastery assignment, you will provide some information that supports the drafting of your Home Project floor plan and creating an electrical symbols legend that will comply with the use of the National Electrical Code’s minimum requirements. Project: Draft a floorplan based on field measurements and create an electrical plan utilizing the proper symbols and the National Electrical Code. Objectiv es: a) Properly convert field measurements into scaled measurements to draw an accurate floorplan. b) Describe installed electrical items with symbols required by the National Electrical Code. Materia ls: (1) Home Project (1) Blue (Painters) Tape (1) Architect’s Scale (1) Pencil (1) Blank white paper (1) Calculator Referen ce: Class lecture notes and textbook Procedure 1 : Using the information you’ve gathered for your Home Project ’s, answer the following questions to demonstrate the accuracy of your drawn Home Project floorplan. 1. At what direction and degree does your plan’s North Arrow point? North and 0 degrees Procedure 2 : Now that you have completed drafting your floorplan you will need to determine the electrical items that must be installed per the National Electrical Code. Fill in the table below with the electrical items required by the NEC that you included in your floor plan. While filling in the table, be sure to add any items to your floorplan you may have missed, to create a NEC-compliant electrical plan.
