What would the consequences be if lessons consistently had one but not the other? Why do ELLs need effective instruction in every content area? What are some of the harmful effects of providing ELLs with instruction only in the content areas that are on a state’s high-stakes tests? What are some ways teachers can ensure that they are providing effective instruction for students in all content areas and not just the tested ones? Provide examples from personal experiences or observations. Content and language provides a foundation for creating learning objectives. Language objectives are to support the development of language related to the process and content. Content objectives are meant to support facts, process, and ideas. Learning objectives/content objectives helps what ELL students are learning to State standards. Language content/ success criteria depict how ELL students demonstrate their understanding of the concept. Teacher's can then see if ELL students are meeting expectations. If lessons only had one lesson consistency instead of both, students may not be fully grasping the information or unit. ) By having consistency and stimulation across content areq, it can help ELL students to understand the core curriculum. It is important for them to understand and learn their grade level content as well as improving their English proficiency. It is also important to select published material and consider how it will be used in the classroom for the students. One of the harmful effects is teaching by the test. It will not help the student beyond the assessment and will not help succeed outside of the academic test. ELLs are at a very high risk of academic failure which can then have a negative impact on their self efficacy and emotional wellbeing. ) By providing other form of assessments such as Performance Assessments to depict their understanding of a unit/lesson. For example by having the student verbally demonstrate their understanding of vocabulary words. Including activities and graphic organizers, teachers can work to creatively elicit background knowledge from their ELL students on content topics to increase their comprehension on the content material. Also by creating K/W/L (know, what to know, learned) chart, ELL students can share their knowledge and how it can connect to new information. For example, going over art vocabulary words and connecting it to the real world such as when do we see complimentary colors.
