4.2.2 Lab: Coastal Erosion Case Study
After learning about “El C”, I decided to do some more research to find the best conclusion for the citizens on this barrier island. In the sketch below it shows what a barrier island would look like and how it can be affected by sea level rise. After completing this sketch it is clear to see that the people on “El C” are really affected by coastal erosion. Coastal erosion is the natural process that occurs when sea level rises, strong waves, tides, and currents hit the shore. After this process the sediments or rocks are washed up and deposited elsewhere, which causes a change in the island shape. For this reason I believe that if a structure was made to stop the erosion and trap the moving sediments, the civilians of “El C”
should no longer be in as much danger as before.
2
I believe this solution could work because in Louisana, the land was starting to get smaller and smaller due to coastal erosion. To help stop this erosion from happening, they started
to plant vegetation near the wetlands to help keeps all the washed up sediments in the same place
they were originally at. This has worked really well for Louisiana’s coastal regions and I think it could work even better in the future at “El C” with more and more time and dedication put into it.
I think building a structure is the best solution because it will be easier to maintain
rather than planting vegetation like Louisana did. I think planting vegetation is another good idea
but in the long run, I believe that it would just to be too much work to handle. Although if there was a structure would stay up in its place and wouldn't need as much maintenance as other things. With this structure it would basically just act as a wall with tiny drainage towards the bottom so the water leaves, but the sediments stay. Every so often the wall will have to get moved back a little bit, just so the island can keep on growing.
In 10 years I think the barrier island “El C” would be thriving. I believe the island will start to grow back and possibly even grow larger than it was before. Within 10 years I think all

the upsets and hiccups with the structure will be gone and the island will not have to worry about
the dangers anymore.

Two cities A and B are connected by a 200km long train line. A train leaves A for B at 20 km / h at the same time as another train leaves B for A at 5 km / h. In the samemoment a fly leaves from A to B following the train line. The fly flies at 40 km / h until it collides with train B. At that moment it returns instantly and follows the train line until it collides with train A. At that moment it returns instantly and follows the line of the train. train until it collides with train B. The fly continues this process, traveling ever smaller distances until the two trains meet. (It is an ideal problem and the fly does not get squashed by the trains). What is the total distance traveled by the fly?

Analyse several voltage and current situations in different loading scenarios in a simplified radial (transformer to consumption) medium-voltage power system example. There are only 2 nodes in the 35 kV line – node 0 from the 110/35 kV and node 1 with one consumer. The physical characteristics of the line and the loading scenarios are individualized for each student – please see the attached file Excel “WM9P3 Task1 data” for your particular data set.
Briefly reflect on the complexity of the calculations for known input or output voltage, as well as for fixed or voltage-dependent consumption in this simple power system model.
Analyse and discuss the sensitivity of the voltage drop [in % of amplitude and the degrees of phase] with respect to the current level [in %] and to the power factor.

From time to time, depending on the conductor size, an electrician has to re-identify a conductor as a grounded conductor or a grounding conductor. Wrapping the conductor with green electrical tape is the most common way to re-identify a grounding conductor. White tape is used to re-identify a grounded conductor. Discuss the difference in the way a grounding conductor is re-identified with green tape and how a grounded conductor is re-identified with white tape
