Week 4 assignment: KIA’s EV9 Identify the obstacles your organization might face in attempting to adopt an innovative product or process. o There are several barriers and challenges that can prevent widespread adoption of new innovations into existing systems and structures, including Cost: New innovations often require significant investments in terms of time, money, and resources. From my experience we have been working tirelessly to perfect the car model. This has led to an increase in hours worked and money spent to cover those hours. This can make it difficult for organizations to adopt new innovations, especially if they are not able to secure the funding required. Also, a lack of understanding. Many organizations may not fully understand the potential benefits and drawbacks of new innovations, which can make it difficult for them to make informed decisions about whether to adopt them. Explain how to mitigate the risks and leverage the advantages you identify. o There are several ways to mitigate risk. First one must identify the risk. Next, assess its likelihood and potential impact. Third, devise an actionable risk management plan, Last execute actions to mitigate the risk and minimize its impact. As for my innovation. One major risk we are facing is the car not turning on. This could lead to major pushback for us. We have currently had to pushback production date twice because of this risk. We have planned to implement more training but on a more personalized, one-on-one setting. Identify people who will make good project champions. Explain how project champions help ensure that you’ll achieve the benefits of championing and minimize the risks. o A good choice for a Project Champion is someone who has shown past interest in the issue, topic or its solution. A good champion will understand the needs of the project and will not pursue inefficient courses of action or go off-course. They will have a clear understanding of the politics that it could take to get the project started and to keep it going. They will be familiar with and able to work with the appropriate entities to complete the project. Two months ago, KIA sent a group of 100 team members to Korea to learn first-hand the necessary steps to ensure a smooth process. Those 100 team members would be great project champions. Consider whether to use mostly sequential or parallel processes. o The Parallel steps model is mostly used when a workflow might have multiple paths active at the same time. In this pattern, the workflow splits at some point into separate paths, each of which may contain multiple steps. At some point,
these paths may merge again. At the merge point, you can decide whether the workflow should wait for all preceding paths to complete, or whether the workflow should continue as soon as the first path reaches the merge point and expire any other active paths. The Sequential workflow step model is typically the most common workflow execution model. In this model, steps in the workflow flow from one to the other, based on the lines that connect the steps and the logic that determine how the workflow flows from one task to the next, and steps wait for the preceding step to complete. Kia should be following a sequential process. Address the influence using stage-gate processes would have on development cycle time and development costs. o stage Gate process is a methodology that improves project outcomes and prevents risk by adding gates, or areas for review, throughout your project plan. This framework is most used for product development projects, but it is useful for any complex project. Some benefits of this process include: The Stage-Gate Process enables decision-making. Teams make better decisions faster. Also, Phase Gate processes also allow companies to kill projects that aren’t viable. It guides teams to make a strong definition for the product and business case, then reviewed by an independent party of gatekeepers. Some disadvantages include; Stage-Gate models may also entail too much management process, especially for smaller companies. Some companies may favor a lightweight process that has fewer check-ins and fewer formal deliverables. Some companies may allow good project management techniques to substitute for formal stages and gates. Analyze the benefits and costs of involving customers and suppliers in the development process. Consider how to test the viability of your product or process with your customers and suppliers in your analysis. o By involving customer(s) in the new product development process, companies aim to get concepts and insights that allow them to improve an existing product or launch a new product in the market. Customer involvement in new product development is considered important for successful product development Conclude whether you should continue with the development of your innovation based on the evaluation you performed. o I strongly believe KIA should move forward with their production of an electric car.
