SCI 100 Module Six Activity Template: Science in the Real World Instructions First, choose one video from the module resources to watch. You should use points made in the video you chose, and any other course resources, to support your responses to the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Apply the scientific lens to a personal experience or event. The value in understanding the natural sciences and being able to identify it for me personally relates to the video that I chose “The Earth is Full” this video talks about how earth is becoming impossible to live on and unsustainable due to rising economic growths, global warming, climate change, technology, and renewable energy. A personal experience where I applied the scientific lens was littering I used to drop trash on the ground a lot and never thought anything of it but when I realized how much damage that was doing to the earth I stopped and made sure to find the nearest trash can and throw it away and when I am not near one I like to carry my own small trash bags with me. Littering endangers the environment very heavily especially with wildlife and the economy around us but more so for me I care more about the wildlife and keeping my own neighborhood clean I hate taking a walk and I see tons of plastic bottles and trash everywhere all on the sidewalks this does nothing but create a toxic environment for us humans as well being that some people litter more than just plastic bottles and flyaway bags they litter sharp objects that can hurt someone as well. Animals can get caught and trapped in bottles or cut themselves and die from being trapped and not being able to remove themselves when I used to come across videos of people helping dogs remove a glass jar from their head it definitely made me switch my bad ways of polluting the earth right along with the rest of the people that do that and I didn’t want to be apart of that. Explain the value of being a scientifically informed citizen within your community. The value of being a scientifically informed citizen within your community is being able to gain extensive knowledge about the natural sciences around you and have a better understanding of these issues. Lacking this information can cause you to be biased about things and that’s where things get misconstrued because u may listen to the wrong source especially with social media reporting mostly everything with not scientifically backed up facts. A lot of people don’t believe in the weather or natural disasters and then when these natural disasters hit like tornadoes people will refuse to evacuate or stay in immediate danger even after being told to evacuate but being scientifically informed about the real danger of these things can prevent deaths. “Even people with greater means sometimes refuse to evacuate. Some won’t leave in fear of their home being damaged or looted, Cuite said. Or they’ll remember weathering a previous storm and feel confident in their ability to survive the current one.” Discuss the obligation of citizens to be scientifically literate and how that could affect global contemporary issues.
Being scientifically literate will help citizens to make informed decisions based off scientific facts and knowledge but being able to understand, break down and interpret scientific research this can help to better understanding natural phenomenon’s including climate change/global warming and hurricanes/natural disasters.
