ECE 351 1 Exam 2 Study Sheet Be able to: Change back and forth between the various ways to represent a discrete-time digital system: o Block diagram o Impulse Response o System Transfer Function (and associated frequency response) o Difference Equation o State Variable Representation Classify systems as FIR or IIR, BIBO stable or not BIBO stable Find the output of a discrete-time LTI system, given the input and either the impulse response h[n] or the transfer function H(z). y[n] = ____________________ or Y(z) = ____________________ Determine the time-domain signal for constants, exponentials and sinusoids, given the corresponding DFT; and find the DFT of a given discrete-time signal. h[n] H(z) Z Z -1 Difference Equation H(z) = P(z)/Q(z) H( ) z = e j
ECE 351 2 Find the state-variable representation for a given block diagram, and solve simple problems using state variables; e.g., find the output, y[n], given A, B, C and D. Find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a 2 x 2 matrix. Use MATLAB to design analog and digital filters. Pay particular attention to the design of Butterworth filters, as covered in the Butterworth Filter practice problems (on the Assignments sheet). Use MATLAB’s functions: fft and abs (to find and plot the magnitude spectrum of a discrete-time signal); freqz and abs (to find and plot the magnitude of the frequency response of a filter); eig (to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix). Use the function plotspec (provided in the lectures) to plot the spectrum of a discrete-time signal, on a frequency axis in Hz; and Use MATLAB’s GUI fdatool to design digital filters to meet given specifications, and to find the resulting H(z), the pole-zero plot, and the impulse response. Fair Game: Material Covered: Lectures 10 - 20 and HW Assignments 6 - 13. Guaranteed Questions - Topics 1. Using MATLAB to design a filter. 2. Filter design by pole-zero placement. 3. Recognizing a signal (constant, exponential, sinusoid, or combination) based its DFT magnitude spectrum 4. State space analysis
