2 (3 pts) What variable did you hold constant when making the above measurements? Why? (3 pts) Based on these measurements, describe the relationship between capacitance and plate surface area. Write your answer in words. (3 pts) Write a math expression that represents the relationship you described above. Hint: use a proportional sign ( 𝛼𝛼 ) not an equal sign. (3 pts) Describe the effect of putting the acrylic sheet between the metal plates. Small plates Large plates Capacitance (with acrylic sheet) Capacitance (no acrylic sheet)
3 Part 2 – Series/Parallel Circuits (now with a capacitor!) Circuit 1 diagram (4 pts, remember to label bulb 1!): (2 pts) What happens to each lightbulb when you close the switch the first time? (2 pts) What happens to each lightbulb for the next ~5-10 seconds after opening the switch? (2 pts) What happens to each lightbulb if you close the switch again?

4 Circuit 2 diagram (4 pts): (2 pts) What happens to each lightbulb when you close the switch the first time? (2 pts) What happens to each lightbulb for the next ~5-10 seconds after opening the switch? (2 pts) What happens to each lightbulb if you close the switch again? Hint: to double check your observations you can “reset” the capacitor by connecting a single wire to both terminals.

7 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. (5 pts) In part 1, you should have noticed the capacitance is larger when the plates are closer together. What would happen to the charges stored on the capacitor if the plate separation was zero? 2. (5 pts) Using your data from part 1, divide the capacitance measured with the acrylic sheet between the plates by the capacitance measured without the acrylic sheet. Do this for both the small and large plates, then take the average between the two values. Show your work. (This value is called the dielectric constant, often represented with the symbol 𝜅𝜅 . It is always larger than 1 for all materials.) 3. (5 pts) Combine the proportional relationships from part 1 into a single proportion that includes capacitance (C), plate surface area (A), plate separation (d), and the dielectric constant ( 𝜅𝜅 ). 4. (5 pts) Consider circuit 1 from part 2. When you first closed the switch, why did bulb 1 light up, immediately start dimming, and eventually turn off completely? Hint: remember the bulb only lights up when charge is flowing through it. Second hint: read the introduction.
