Identity Podcast Assignment Andrew Feng Pima Community College GEO103 Cultural Geography Dr. Cynthia Sorrensen Jun 16, 2023
Identity Podcast Assignment I have a strong fascination with Native American culture, particularly the Indian culture and the Hopi culture. So I chose to listen to the Native Voice One and Iroquois History and Legends podcasts. Native Voice One serves as a platform for communication and the presentation of the voices and stories of Native Americans. This platform enables Native Americans to share their experiences, perspectives, and cultures. It encompasses news from within the Native community, interviews with Native leaders and activists, recordings of musical performances and cultural celebrations, as well as features on Native American history, culture, and contemporary issues (Native Voice One, 2022). Iroquois History and Legends is a podcast that centers around the history and culture of the Iroquois. Through this podcast, the traditions and legends of the Iroquois Tribe are shared, offering listeners the opportunity to delve into the history, culture, art, and philosophy of the Iroquois Tribe ( Home , n.d.). In both podcasts, allusions are made to the tribal myths, creation myths, and heroic legends that hold significant importance in their culture and sense of self. These narratives communicate the tribe's history and values while showcasing their profound attachment to the land, the natural world, and their forebears. For instance, the Iroquois legend of the "Stairway to the Sky" elucidates how their ancestors descended from the celestial realm to the earthly realm, establishing a unique bond with the land and the natural environment. This tale not only elucidates the origin and
historical recollections of the Iroquois Tribe but also underscores their profound connection to the land and their role as its custodians. Through such historical recollections, a profound sense of identity is forged. They perceive themselves as descendants of these narratives, carrying the wisdom and customs of their ancestors while also bearing special responsibilities and missions (Fouberg & Murphy, 2020). What strikes me about these two podcasts is the remarkable depiction of the diversity and intricacy inherent in Native American tribes and their legacies spanning generations. Initially, I held the belief that the culture, tales, and customs of these Native American tribes would gradually fade into the depths of history over time. However, I was taken aback to discover that within the Native American populace, there exist distinct tribes, communities, and cultural groups, each possessing a unique history, set of traditions, and identity. This realization has opened my eyes to the fact that national and ethnic identities are multifaceted, extending far beyond a singular concept and encompassing a multitude of diverse experiences and narratives. What astounds me even further is the ability of these cultural traditions to be handed down from one generation to the next, providing a sense of identity and serving as guiding principles for future descendants. It has made me recognize the pivotal role that tradition and history play in shaping an individual's and a group's sense of belonging and identity. Moreover, it has emphasized the immense value and significance of cultural inheritance. Cultural identity is intricately intertwined not only with an individual's self-perception but also with the broader aspects of community, culture, and historical recollection.
