Report
Milestone I Brandon Tackett GEO 330 The geohazard that will be investigated for this project is tornadoes. Specifically the area of Southern Illinois located inside of the area known as “new tornado alley”. Image by Fox 6 now This area has seen a vast uptick in tornadic activity with the shift that has occurred in tornado alley. This has created a much larger area affected and greatly increases the need for a better understanding of how tornadoes work and how they are both affected by and affect the Earth’s spheres. When it comes to tornadoes, there are three of earth’s systems that contribute to the tornadoes themselves. These are the atmosphere which is air, the hydrosphere which is the Earth’s water, and the geosphere which is land. The main sphere that is directly affected by tornadoes is the biosphere, which is all the living things on earth. The atmosphere has the most effect on the formation of tornadoes. As the cold moist air in the atmosphere collides with warmer air in the atmosphere as the fronts come together results in a spinning of the atmosphere which results in the creation of tornadic activity. The pressure,
humidity, and moisture in the atmosphere has a direct impact on the size and strength of the tornado. Photo by Weebly Tornadoes interact with all four systems and have a direct effect on each system. The following chart by Weebly shows how each sphere is affected.
Over time the interrelationships between the processes and tornadoes have remained somewhat consistent. The exception to that is the biosphere. As populations have grown and humans have settled in different areas, the effect of tornadoes on those areas have changed. Areas that were not affected by tornadoes in the past now are populated causing a much greater effect to humans. As the weather patterns have shifted it has also had an effect on which areas were more affected. I think that there is an increase in tornadic activity. This is due to a change in weather patterns which has led to more areas of warm air to collide with the cooler air leading to a higher risk of tornadoes. This shift has taken place due the change in climate that has occurred over a timespan of millions of years. References Naranjo, L. (2010).
