Pre-Lab Experiment DC 2 1 Ahona Chowdhury Pre-Lab Experiment DC 2 Ahona Chowdhury 833005883 Section 505 Experiment: Resistors and the Colour Code
Pre-Lab Experiment DC 2 2 Ahona Chowdhury Purpose: This experiment is to familiarize with the digital and analog ohmmeter, to learn, read and use the resistor colour code and become aware of the magnitude and impact of the internal resistance Materials: Resistors: - 1 1-MΩ, 1-W film resistor - 1 1-MΩ, 2-W film resistor - 1 1-MΩ, ½-W film resistor - 1 6.8-Ω, 91-Ω, 220-Ω, 3.3-kΩ, 10-kΩ, 470-kΩ, 1-MΩ, ¼-W film resistors Instruments: - 1 VOM (Volt-Ohm-Milliammeter) - 1 DMM (Digital Multimeter) Procedure: Body Size: In the space below, draw the physical sizes of 1/4-W, 1/2-W, 1-W, and 2-W, 1-Met film resistors (colour bands = brown, black, green). The size increases with wattage rating. Identify each by its wattage rating. Determine how much larger is the I-W resistor than the 1/2-W resistor. Colour Code: Determine the colour bands for each resistor appearing in and note them in Table 1. Find each resistor in your provided kit and enter the colours for all four bands in Table 2. Enter the numerical value of each colour in the next column. We read the resistance level using the DMM and insert the value in Table 2. For each resistor, we take the time to choose the scale that will result in the highest degree of accuracy for the measurement. We determine the magnitude of the difference between the nominal and measured values using the following equation. Repeat the same process by using the VOM and insert the data in Table 3. For the DMM measurements, find if all the resistors are within the specified tolerance range. We can check by referencing Table 2 or comparing the per cent tolerance to that listed in Table 1. to Difference = Nominal Measured Nominal x 100%
