Position Paper Assignment Mano. Noue Brendan. Riggin Faculty of Health, University of Waterloo REC 101 November 20th, 2023 1. At a recent council meeting, the City of Hamilton, Ontario decided to pursue a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. This decision will require the investment of public
money to support the event. Imagine you are a citizen living in Hamilton, would you be in favour of hosting the Games assuming the bid is successful? Introduction Ontario has decided to pursue a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and this decision will require the investment of public money to support the event. Major sporting events are extremely expensive to host (Preuss, 2006). As there can be many benefits that come with hosting this sort of event, there are also risks that come with it. It is important to see how hosting this event could affect the city either positively or negatively. Thesis statement As a citizen living in Hamiliton, my opinion on whether I would be in favour of hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games assuming the bid is successful would depend on benefits and the potential risks. In response to the previous sentence, I am in favour of hosting the Games because of the benefits that would come with it and how it would improve the city as a whole. Arguments in favor of my position Increases tourism Mega sporting events have huge impacts on the tourism of host cities. These sporting events bring visitors, supporters, and more attention to the city (Muller, 2016). The success of increasing tourism depends on planning and on how well the hosted event is promoted to the
public. A successful event can then lead to future promotional opportunities and open the possibility for other financial ventures (Carlini, 2020). Long-term investment Hosting this sporting event can create a lot of jobs for the working citizens of the community. The city will have much improved sporting venues and facilities ( Naylor, M., Dickson, G., & Johnston, M. 2021). I feel so strongly about my position because I truly believe that these are the proving factors that back it up. Arguments in opposition to my position. Financial risk When looking at whether the Commonwealth Games should be hosted in Hamilton, it is important to look at how this might financially affect the city and its economy (Atci, 2016). It can cost a lot of money to host a major sporting event and doing that can potentially have financial risks. Resource Allocation Resource allocation is the process of distributing the available resources in an effective way to achieve specific goals ( Bull, C., & Lovell, J. 2007). Funds spent for hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games could be spent in other areas. Improving the overall community could be argued to be more important than hosting the 2030 games. Conclusion

To conclude, while understanding that there are concerns regarding the hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the benefits outweigh the risks. The increase in tourism and long-term investment can contribute to the city’s long-term growth, development, and prosperity (Pettinger, 2019). Although there are benefits, those who oversee the planning of the Commonwealth Games must ensure that it is planned carefully to limit the risks and that positive effects come with the hosting of the 2030 Games.
