Report
Government Agencies are seen as the “4 th Branch of Government” because they are often independent government entities that enact many laws known as regulations. The federal agency that is in charge of consumer protection issues is the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Explore the Federal Trade Commission site and the information provided about the FTC. Having explored this FTC website, what are your impressions about this agency and its purpose? In your opinion is this agency necessary? Why or why not? The FTC purpose is the prevent unfair methods of competition in commerce as part of the battle to “bust the trusts.” Secondly, “The FTC is an agency that protects consumers and competition by preventing anticompetitive deceptive, and unfair business practices through law enforcement, advocacy, and education without unduly burdening legitimate business activity.” Federal Trade Commission Protecting America’s Consumers, https://www.ftc.gov . After looking over the FTC website, my impressions about this agency and its purpose are the protection you can receive and the number of resources to help you. For example, you can report fraud, identity theft, get a free credit report, receive consumers alerts, and more. In addition, you can file an antitrust complaint under the competition sections, file tech antitrust complaints, etc. This agency is necessary because it's a reliable source that provides all the tools on one website anyone may need. Also, the help the FTC gives to competitive markets to help and ensure businesses compete fairly. On top of the competition, consumers can receive protection as well, so it's not one-sided, leaving the FTC with a grounded purpose and resources that are necessary from their history since creation in 1914.
