The different types of devices I use to access my online classroom are desktop, laptop, and cellular device. Some of benefits of using a desktop are that they are located at libraries and my workplace. Being able to conveniently access my classroom at work allows me to not have to do schoolwork at home as often. When I am not doing anything at work, I can check my grades or periodically work on assignments. The drawbacks of using a desktop are that it is not as mobile as other devices and it requires you to have to setup to a network. The benefits of using a laptop is that it is easy to take with you almost anywhere. I do most of my schoolwork on my laptop, due to it being the fastest of the three devices. My laptop allows to multitask and switch between a multitude of apps and it is the most reliable when trying to open of the links on the Ashford website. The drawbacks of using a laptop are that if you don’t have a USB hotspot you need to have access to the Wi-Fi password of wherever you are located. If you don’t have connection to the internet you can not use the laptop to its full potential. Lastly the benefits of using my phone is that it is the most accessible of the three. I can use my phone to check my grades at any time. Also, with the Ashford app I can get reminders of upcoming assignments. The drawbacks of using my phone are that it is hard to keep switching between tabs if I need to make a journal entry. Each of the three devices I use have their pros and cons. On the Digital Tools page there a lot of tools that will be help me reach my academic goals. The Ashford writing center will help me when writing essays for any class that I take. If I am feeling stuck when writing a paper, I can go the writing center to help me start. The writing center is also helpful if I need to know how to properly cite my sources or if I need to view different writing samples. The most helpful of the Microsoft tools would obviously have to be Microsoft Word. Many classes require you to use Word, whether you are writing a paper or
doing a weekly journal. It would be difficult for me to progress without having Word. The tool that I use in Digital Textbook is the search tool. When I am confused on a paragraph prompt, I use the search tool to easily find the section that I need using key words. I also use the search tool when I am taking quizzes to help me answer questions. Two types of Data Storage are hard drive storage and cloud storage. One of the benefits of using a hard drive to store information is that you can store a large amount of information easily. I can easily separate all the data I need to store into individual folders on my hard drive. Also, I can transfer the data from my hard drive to another if need be. The drawback of using a hard drive to store data is that it can be physically destroyed if handled improperly. You can potentially lose all your data if you accidentally damage your hard drive. The benefits of using cloud storage are that unlike hard drive storage, the cloud is not something that can be physically damaged. The cloud can also be used on a multitude of devices. The drawback of using cloud storage is that it cannot be accessed without access to the internet. The method of storage that I use is hard drive storage. I do not have any reason to have to save data on to the cloud. My list of strengths when it comes to digital literacy is not very long. I am skilled in using all sorts of digital devices. I use my laptop for almost everything and I have a good grasp on most technology. An area I would to improve on is being able to use Microsoft word to its full capabilities and I would also like to learn to be able to use cloud storage more often. Overall, I would like to improve on my digital literacy. I hope that by the end of this class I become more proficient in using all things related to digital literacy.
