Exploration: Project Gutenberg March 1, 2016 When and why was Project Gutenberg started and by whom? Project Gutenberg was created by Michael Hart in 1971. The goal of Project Gutenberg was to make literary works in the public domain available electronically for free. How is digitization accomplished? A book is digitized by scanning each page, creating an image. Software is used to take the text off the image and create a text file. if the book is in poor condition, each word is manually typed. Address the advantages/disadvantages of the two types of digitization formats? Creating a “text format” allows the contents to bed earthed, copied, indexed, analyzed, and compared with other books. “Text format” files are a lot smaller than “image formats.” “Text formats” can also be easily enlarged for visually impaired readers and can be used with speech recognition software. Why is Project Gutenberg's perspective rather different then that of the Internet Archive? Project Gutenberg’s perspective is different from Internet Archive because Project Gutenberg believes in proofreading from humans, giving the texts a much higher reliability percentage (99.95%).
