Foundations of Education- D166 KEM2: Historical & Cultural Influences on Best Practice KEM2- KEM2 Task 2: Teacher Interview A. https://www.floridaeducationfoundation.org/second-grade-standards B. The interview was completed via phone, the interview verification form is attached. C1. Application of Content Standards I interviewed Ms. Ramirez, a second-grade teacher with Manatee County School District. Manatee County School District provides an alternative education program for Manatee County students, grades kindergarten to eighth. Manatee County School District is funded by Manatee County funding, the School District of Manatee County, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice system, and local donors. This interview includes content standards and their impact on the Manatee County School District second-grade alternative education program. Ms. Ramirez has decorated her classroom to reflect the content standards in multiple forms. She has a weekly and a holiday calendar pinned up on the wall in her room. She also provides written standards on the whiteboard in her classroom to reflect their daily standards. She provides quizzes and educational games to gauge if a student has mastered a standard. Ms. Ramirez stated the guidelines offer her a baseline for her and she can only improve upon them. Internal and External Influences Ms. Ramirez holds an English for Speakers of Other Languages certification endorsement along with her Elementary Education certification. With her endorsement, she must be sure to
Foundations of Education- D166 KEM2: Historical & Cultural Influences on Best Practice balance her lesson plans to ensure all of her students receive the same assistance to meet the standards. Because MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT is an alternative education program and is funded by the school district, Ms. Ramirez still must adhere to the state assessments, which have recently changed. Ms. Ramirez must ensure her students are meeting the satisfactory standards on the state assessments as well as meet the standards of MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT. As MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT adheres to the state regulations, there is tremendous paperwork that comes along with it. She finds it difficult at times to balance her students and the required paperwork. Teacher Identity Ms. Ramirez gained her certification in 2018 and has been teaching ever since. She started out at a local charter school and gained employment with MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT in 2021. Ms. Ramirez stated teacher was natural for her and she loved it since day one. She is more confident now than she has been. She loves the small class size and her students. She has built great relationships with her coworkers and they work together for the benefit of the students. Her mindset aligns with Hattie’s midframe number 7, “It’s my role to develop positive relationships in class and staffrooms. Professional Growth Ms. Ramirez stated she continues to look for courses to assist her journey as a teacher. She has already obtained her ESOL certificate and will continue to grow professionally through enrichment and certification courses. She believes we are always learning and should always be open to learning. C2.
Foundations of Education- D166 KEM2: Historical & Cultural Influences on Best Practice Feelings Before the interview with Ms. Ramirez, I felt nervous. I am not sure why. During the interview, I began to relax and really understand her view on teaching. I started to feel inspired and ready to start my teaching journey. I think Ms. Ramirez was just as nervous as I was. I know if I was asked for a teacher interview, I would be nervous and overthink my responses. However, throughout the interview, her voice became more clear, confident and joyous. C3. Evaluation The interview actually exceeded my expectations. I was not expecting to feel so inspired after the interview. Throughout the interview, Ms. Ramirez’s enthusiasm was great and she was able to describe her love of teaching in great detail. The one thing I would have changed in my interview is I would have done the interview in person. She was great over the phone and I could only imagine what it would have been like in person and really capturing her joy of being a teacher. C4. Analysis I agree with Ms. Ramirez, the standards should be the baseline and not just the minimum. I also believe a student learns better when they are offered multiple ways to learn including visual, written, and spoken. Ms. Ramirez does provide different ways of learning in her classroom each day. I do agree that Ms. Ramirez provides her students with equal opportunities for learning. She sometimes pairs students based on their understanding and allows her ESOL children to work with her non-ESOL students to build relationships and strengthen communication skills for all students.

Foundations of Education- D166 KEM2: Historical & Cultural Influences on Best Practice I also agree with Ms. Ramirez regarding the external influences of state regulations. She did state she enjoys working with MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT as although there is a lot of paperwork it is not the same as working in the district. I also agree with Ms. Ramirez’s view on her teacher identity. She is a great person who loves what she does. She makes a difference in not only the students’ lives but all of her coworkers including myself. She makes a valid point on continual learning; we are human beings and it is in our nature to be curious and continue to learn. We can learn both good and bad behaviors however it is up to us to choose. I also agree our relationships with our students and coworkers are important relationships we have as we spend more time at work then we do at home. C5. Conclusion Although I work with Ms. Ramirez at MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, I really did not have much interaction with our teachers and their classrooms. This interview has helped me realize how important a teacher is in a student’s life. They can be a huge influence on a student and that is not always positive. A bad teacher can leave a lasting effect on a student that will follow them for a long time. If I were to conduct the interview again, I would make sure it was in person. I could feel the joy over the phone however it would have been better in person. Also, I now know what to expect so I will not be as nervous as I was for this interview. C6. Action
Foundations of Education- D166 KEM2: Historical & Cultural Influences on Best Practice All of John Hattie’s 10 Midframes support teacher success however the one that stands out to me is number 2 “The success and failure of my students’ learning is about what I do or don’t do. I am a change agent.” I strongly believe all teachers have a major impact on their students. Their primary years are fundamental for their development and a teacher can either be the reason a student loves learning or the reason a student hates learning. A personal strength of mine is to always uplift those around me. I believe we all have the potential to be who we want to be but external factors can have a tremendous impact on our decisions and how we view life. A personal weakness of mine is always uplifting those around me. I have to remember that not everyone is ready to make changes or maybe they like the way they are. It is also not up to me if someone needs to change and I cannot hold them to my expectations of them. My SMART goal is to improve my personal development by attending one professional development workshop every two months for the academic year. References Hattie, J., & Zierer, K.
