1 Module One Short Answer SNHU IDS-100-R6377: Perspectives in Liberal Arts Janell Campbell
2 Module One Short Answer I believe the importance of developing information literacy skills, is the fact that you can get more rounded in problem solving and thinking more critically, from multiple perspectives, on a topic. Developing these skills help in finding, managing, and processing information. They help in problem solving by providing a pleather of information, forming educated opinions while also understanding others’ opinions, and aid in applying that knowledge when problem solving. Information literacy skills provide a more rounded understanding of what is being investigated. Viewing multiple sources, figuring which of those sources are trusted and which are fabricated, guides us in making educated opinions. The resources provided in module one has changed my information literacy skills by pointing out that there are so many resources out there! My go to is google since it can be accessed at a moments notice, but with all of the algorithms and paid ads these days most of what populates on top may not always be trusted sources. Books such as encyclopedias, or topic specific books may not be readily available and take time to go through, but I do find myself at the library when I need to research something of importance. This module has highlighted some digital sources that would provide great resources as quickly, but more accurately and well- rounded than google. The Shapiro Library has been a great resource for me so far. I am still learning the ins and outs of it, but it has helped me in researching for previous classes already. I am excited to take a dive into the A-Z digital database that Shapiro Library has to offer. Offering 269 different databases that I am sure will fulfill any bit of research that I may need. Most importantly, how to evaluate sources has been the most impactful. Unfortunately, in today’s world, there is a lot of
3 false or dated information out there and this guide will certainly help in narrowing down and choosing what sources will work best in any case. Having strong information literacy skills will absolutely impact both my academic and professional career. Academically there is no getting around not having information literacy skills. We are not experts on anything, we are here to learn after all, so being able to easily sort through and find the sources and information needed to research a topic is necessary. The better the skills the better the outcome of our papers. Professionally I am constantly doing research on the latest software that can help in automating company finances, keeping up with state specific tax laws that change more often than they should, and furthermore having to present all of this data. Presenting to the higher ups is never an easy task but being well educated on the subject and having the resources to back up the information and answer any questions is key.
