Module 2 Short Responses – Question 1 What types of primary and secondary sources will you need to use to support the topic you are examining in your essay? You don't need the actual sources yet, but you should have an idea of what they might be (such as an eyewitness account of an event, for example). The types of primary sources I would need would be letters from the victims of the Trail of Tears, new articles covering the topic from the time when it happened, and any photos that may be in circulation from the time of the event. Secondary sources would be things like a biography of victims from the event, textbooks covering the event, or possibly a movie like a biopic or something from a written source that covered the event post-event. Module 2 Short Responses – Question 2 What are two or three keywords you could use to look for sources to answer this question? The two or three keywords that I could search to get as much information on this sentence would be "sandhogs" "Irish immigrant construction" and "Brooklyn Bridge." Module 2 Short Responses – Question 3 What subject terms can you use to continue your search? The subject terms I could use to continue my search could be; Mark Brunnel Turn-of-the-century labor wages NYC turn of the century construction Wage strikes I feel that these three terms could help me find more on the sandhogs and help me get a feel for what they were going through to get these tunnels built as well as the dangers they were putting themselves in to get it done. Module 2 Short Responses – Question 4
When you search for "construction," you get a lot of extraneous answers. What [?]Boolean operators[/?] and corresponding search terms could you use to narrow your search? Boolean operators are integral to narrowing down a search. For example, when researching NYC turn-of-the-century construction I would type in NYC turn-of-the-century construction and sandhogs, NYC turn-of-the-century construction, not NYC construction.
