2 What is the SIOP Model? The SIOP model was created to help teachers create lesson plans. The SIOP model is also helpful for teachers to be able to go back and see how effective the lesson was. They are able to use this to evaluate and reflect on what changes can be made to the lesson so the students are reaching the learning objectives. There are different stage to the SIOP model that make it affective and they are; lesson preproduction, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice & application, lesson delivery and review and assessment. All of the steps are critical so the model is affective. In the first step lesson preproduction you create the objectives and learning outcomes for the lesson. Here you want to figure out exactly what you want to teach and create the standards that you will be grading the students with. In this step you also collect the materials that you will be using to create a lesson plan for the students. Once you’re done in this step you move onto building the background. You obviously do not want to create a lesson plan for your students and they have no prior knowledge to the material. If you were to teach students about a country that they have no idea about then, more than likely will not be interested since they can’t make real life connections to it. By building a background knowledge of the material that is going to be taught children will be entertained and want to connect to the lesson as much as they can. For example creating lessons that correlate to at home life for students or events that are happening in the community student will feel a sense of similarity and be comfortable enough to actually interact and be engaged throughout the lesson. To be able to complete these two steps you must have a knowledge of the students cultural background and also the community culture that they experience.
3 The next step is comprehensible input, this also has a huge impact on how effective the lesson is and if the students will be able to meet all the learning outcomes that are created for them. If the student is unable to fully understand the information that is given to them because it is too advanced then they will not learn anything. Yes they may pick up a little bit but the learning outcomes will not be met which is not effective. Once you have the students' comprehension level figured out you can then start working on your teaching strategies. This can be in big groups, small groups and or individual work times. Every student needs different modifications for lessons so taking that into consideration is also a big impact whether or not the learning outcomes will be met. Next you want to make sure that you let your students interact. Sometimes letting students bounce ideas off of each other will help them get a better grasp on what they are learning. I know for myself when I would work with my peers I would see the way that they would process the assignment and then I would be able to teach them how I figured out the answers. I thought it was really cool because everyone learns differently. Sometimes you might be stuck and not understand the assignment and then someone explains it differently than the way the teacher does and all of a sudden you understand it. This also has a play in the next step which is practice and application. Just let the student actually practice what they are learning so they could fully understand what they are learning about. Like I stated above some students need modifications to learn what they are being taught. Some of them need visual aid, some of them the hands on material where they are able to repeat what the teachers are doing. Having these options open are also great ways to implant student interaction and involvement to meet the learning outcomes.

4 The next step is the way you’re delivering the lesson to your students. Like I stated above students all have different learning strategies. Everyone is different so implementing where you can better support your students is the best thing to do. You wanna make sure that you are speaking at their knowledgeable level so they are not confused. You do not want to use vocabulary that is out of range for them because will cause confusion. Being clear so they fully understand what your teaching is the best thing that you can do when creating a lesson plan and trying to make sure you meet those learning outcomes. After your lesson you want to make sure that you are assessing and being 100% honest on how the lesson went. Sometimes the lessons don’t go as planned and yes that may be frustrating but knowing where you lost your students and watching on what to change for the next time you teach that lesson is very critical. By giving yourself feedback that may be negative or positive you can create a better lesson plan for your students and meet the learning outcome you set for that lesson. If all of these steps are taken into consideration when creating a lesson plan for your students more than likely your lesson plan will be effective and your students will meet the learning outcomes that were created for that lesson. Students thrive when their backgrounds are taken into consideration when lesson plans are created. So that’s something that should always be in mind when working with students. Maybe their culture, community or anything else by creating the feeling of appreciation when they are being acknowledged. And the steps above may seem overwhelming but once you start to create your lesson plans and go step-by-step with the checklist to see what exactly to do it will be clear on what is expected to make sure you are
5 providing the necessary materials and lessons for the student to reach their full potentiometer while in your classroom.
