Sebastian Joseph 8 th of June, 2023 SOCY 101 Chapter 2 Activity 1 https://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2014/01/05/poverty-map/index.html If you can't get into the website, let me know. You should be able to get there. So, the Times has released some data that may interest you. It will tell you about the poverty rate and the number of people in poverty in your general area. You can look at your county and get the information about it. Please respond to the following questions as I would like to get your thoughts: 1. Is this qualitative or quantitative research? Why do you say that? The following research contained in the New York Times is quantitative research. This is because the data is mapped out across a map using numerical data from census tract-level data sourced from the 2008-12 American Community Survey. 2. This particular map relates to poverty. Are there other expectations that you may have for areas that have greater or lesser rates of poverty? In other words, where would you expect to find Blue Ribbon Schools, say, or schools where the education is substandard? Back up your
statements as you cannot simply say that DC schools are bad or Baltimore schools are bad. There has to be a reason why you are saying that. What about things like homeownership? Health care and its availability? Food availability? HS graduation rates? College attendance rates? What I am trying to get to is what other variables do you think would relate best to the poverty rates in given areas? For places with lower rates of poverty, we can expect high school graduation rates and college attendance to be greater due to the idea that areas where more individuals have more wealth can afford to attend high school and pursue higher education along with a better chance of greater food availability. Homeownership and health care are also likely to be more frequent in areas of less poverty. All of these connections are rather evident as areas with lower poverty rates will have more individuals with wealth that can afford the commodities mentioned above. It is also important to note that a cycle or positive feedback loop can be seen where individuals who cannot afford schooling and advanced education due to financial difficulties will have a harder time finding sustainable work, which would cause that individual’s future generations not to be able to have the financial freedom to attend school and advanced education and the cycle repeats. When corroborating based on the Poverty Map from New York Times, it can be seen that urban metropolitan areas like Baltimore contain more areas of poverty than any other place. This could be the result of marginalized communities not being able to access affordable or standard levels of education that can qualify them for higher-paying and more stable careers. Communities become marginalized when taking into account historical discrimination and oppression, socioeconomic disadvantages, and racial and ethnic prejudice. As a result, these communities become essentially trapped in these cycles.
3. Think about how you responded to question 2. Did you stereotype? Did you respond as you did because of implicit bias? Go to Project Implicit and take two tests. (One of them should be Gender-Science or Gender-Career. I don't care what you choose for your second test.) Copy and paste your results. Even if you don't like them, I would like to see them all. How might you interpret these results? When reviewing my answer to question 2, I did not use stereotypes directly; however, I believe that there were indeed implicit biases that I am self-aware of that may have affected my answer to question 2. When it comes to where certain areas are affected more by poverty, the bias in our mind gives us an answer based on outdated teachings and experiences. Urban areas tend to be more crowded, and rent is more expensive. In addition, the cities typically have programs for homeless people, which attract them there. Gender-Science IAT Results:

Skin-tone IAT Results:
After taking and looking at the gender science test results, I can confidently agree that I have no automatic association between females and males with science and liberal arts. The test was conducted to test your immediate reaction without giving the test questions much-advanced thought in hopes of testing bias that might play a role in such an immediate reaction. In my own personal belief, I believe that there is no real association when it comes to gender and the field you study, and I believe the implicit bias surrounding the association is outdated and does not fit my current belief in gender roles. However, it was important to note that this was my first time taking an IAT test, so my results aren’t likely to predict future behavior. This disclaimer is
important, but from my own perspective, I believe that any rational mind will not consciously make decisions or say things that might display bias, and no test can essentially prove someone’s behavior. After taking the skin-tone test, the test results were inaccurate in measuring my bias. In the description, the note mentions how the test-takers’ condition is important in recognizing any discrepancies that might occur. One example that may have been applicable is that I was tired when taking the test, which is possible due to the website not cooperating, which resulted in restarts of the test. The way the test worked is the same as the gender science, however, again, the way the test is structured makes the test-taker’s implicit bias to make an impact in answering the questions. Again, I believe the IAT, especially in this case, should not be used to accurately predict one’s future behavior because it relies on the presumption that our implicit bias will affect our work. I believe that through self-awareness, it is possible to combat bias in any situation. This is probably going to become a discussion prompt in some way so check the discussion board once you turn this in. And don't forget that it is due on 6/8, but the earlier you can get this in the better discussion we can have!
