Artificial Intelligence: The Regressional Advancement
In the ever changing of the world and its technology, we have now stepped into a realm that
is introducing advanced artificial intelligence. Since machines are way faster than humans,
certain tasks that may require an incredible amount of manual work and attention to detail can be
easily accomplished with the help of technology. Technology also ensures improved accuracy.
Further, the use of technology in certain areas can also help save significant costs. The one
problem that we fail to see is that the more that we rely on this technology, the less practice we
have at using our own common sense to solve problems. The phrase that best describes this is
humans are now going through a regressional advancement. As society, we may be considered an
advanced civilization, however as individuals, we may not be able to utilize common sense to
solve problems without the aid of technology.
To effectively evaluate the significance of this technology, I will have to visit how it has
played a role in the past, how we benefit from it presently, and potential future developments of
artificial intelligence. This research will only be accurate by uncovering the positives, as well as
some drawbacks. By investigating how often we use AI, I will be able to specify how it has sped
up our ability to problem solve in modern society. However, while showing how it has aided in
our production, it will in turn point out how reliant on this AI technology we would eventually
become.
The technology that will be discussed throughout this paper is Artificial Technology. One
example of this AI was displayed during a press conference with CEO Greg Brockman. He awed
the crowd by having an AI look through a Hubble telescope. In return, the AI was able to
describe exactly what it observed in the greatest of detail. He explained that this was one feature
of the multimodal functions that the AI will be capable of.
2
Another aspect to be discussed is how the creation of AI will essentially transform the
scientific method all together. This is expected to cut down on the time it will take to analyze the
smallest of particles within research. It is also considered that AI will have less potential biased
analysis of studies as it will work purely off data received. Another way that AI will cut time is
its ability to make calculations of difficult algorithms in little to no time.
Initially, society’s reaction to having such technology was more hesitant than anything else.
The first issue was the lack of understanding of what AI was. A lot of Psyfi movies showed
forms of AI in a more negative light with movie titles such as Terminator and iRobot. Then lack
of understanding was replaced with fear as one day machines would take over mankind.
However, these views were generally depicted on machines that had humanoid type features. Not
realizing that artificial intelligence was growing rapidly right under our noses. One
underestimated version of our AI capabilities was introduced over 70 years ago with our virtual
chess games against CPU. The computer that individuals played against was capable of
processing 20 million potential moves at one time, as well as considering up to 14 moves ahead
at any given point within a game.
Society has grown to become reliant on artificial intelligence almost as fast as it develops.
There have been new developments in AI that could benefit our society in ways like cutting
down time spent on science, analysis of outer space, and even benefit individuals who are having
social issues. However, there are aspects that have not been considered with this new
development. I fear that our reliance on artificial intelligence may affect our natural ability to
problem solve all together.
In academic institutions, AI has played a pivotal role in a student’s success. The availability
of search engines allows for faster, retrievable information on various topics that give students
3
access to information in seconds. This gives an advantage in our ability to learn at a much faster
pace than our predecessors. With vast amounts of information, instructors take precautions by
teaching students how to sift through that information by following sources that are credible to
ensure its accuracy and validity. However, there is a new use in which artificial intelligence
poses a threat to the academic system. With great AI comes great responsibility. In recent years, a
program called ChatGPT has the capability to create hundreds of pages worth of papers that blur
the lines of plagiarism. All an individual must do is ask this program to type a paper on any given
topic and it is produced in minutes. This new technology has had a negative impact on not only
our educational institutions, but on our students in general (Cairns, 2023).
Although the younger generation has thrived with newer technology, even considering AI as
a necessity for advancement, artificial intelligence has invoked a sort of fear on its ability to
impact society on a political level. One event of not was the use of AI on a political campaign
against Joe Biden for the upcoming elections. This visual representation envisioned four more
years under President Biden with greater crime, open borders, war with China, and economic
collapse. The problem with this advertisement was that its visuals were completely generated by
artificial intelligence. This means that none of the images depicted were real photographs.
However, the realism of these images was unsettling to people who watched the campaign ad.
However, what it could have huge beneficial help with is our communication. Artificial
intelligence is used every day with our text messaging, emails, and simple typed documents. This
form of artificial intelligence may be the simplest to explain. Whenever we look up something on
google, and we did not spell it correctly, we always notice the “Did you mean” statement with
the correct spelling of the word. That AI was able to know what you were looking up on its own.
This can help with clear communication amongst one another. The downside to this is that we

never have to rely on our own ability to spell words correctly. This could pose an issue when we
must write things down on paper. Generally, the most formal approach to addressing a topic is a
handwritten letter. If we are used to AI correcting our spelling, grammar, and punctuation, we
may altogether lose the ability to recognize our own mistakes without AI right behind us
cleaning our mistakes.
There are a lot of individuals that are against the advancement of this new AI system as it
could pose as potential security risks regarding personal data, influences that it may have on a
troubled mind, or even issues that may be brought forth with the previously mentioned political
aspect. However, one thing that developers are pushing for is an ethical system that would help
regulate the type of content that these AIs can perform. The one issue that may come about is that
not all individuals who are programming these forms of artificial intelligence will follow these
set forth protocols. There are, however, vast scenarios that have been considered as potentially
harmful repercussions and are taken seriously by developers (Atske, 2021).
There are 3 main limitations that have been addressed by the programming of artificial
intelligence. The first limitation is the programming itself. Essentially, the only way an AI can
learn is through information that we provide it. If the information that we provide to the AI is
incomplete or inaccurate, the results may end up being inaccurate. One way that they avoid these
situations is through extensive testing. The second issue can come from the programming itself.
A computer can only respond based on an algorithmic problem-solving system. This same
method is used by computers in basic scripting. Even in basic scripting, if only one letter is off,
then the whole program will fail and not run properly. To avoid this, companies like NVIDIA
have 18,000 programmers at any given time to ensure that mistakes are difficult to miss. The
third issue is not necessarily its limitation of storing vast amounts of information. In fact, it is not
5
even AI’s ability to process information and come to conclusions. The Issue is that a lot of the
time, the AI is not able to explain how it concluded. One example would be a calculator. We can
simply put in an equation of 2 + 2. The calculator will say 4. However, the computer is not able
to explain why it is 4. It can only reflect its programming, or algorithm, that resulted in the
answer being 4 (APAC Entrepreneur, 2023).
One significant role of artificial intelligence will be the ability to cut down the time it takes to
analyze data, especially scientific data. In fact, the rapid advances of AI in recent years led to
more and more creative applications in science that have been considered in accelerating the
productivity of science. It is used to address global challenges such as the analysis of climate
changes, and uncovering new contagions before it has a chance to affect humans, animals, and
the planet altogether. However, another assumption of the rapidly growing AI has society
considering the negative possibilities. These ideologies consist of loss of control, loss of privacy,
and loss of human value. The development of future AI has the same energy that was placed in
the Space Race in the 1900’s. There is a lack of transparency in the progress of AI, which does
not sit well with society as it raises concerns about privacy and surveillance capabilities (OECD,
2023).
When viewing artificial intelligence through the scope of critical analysis, although there are
some notable fears, society wants, even demands, the progression in this technological field. In
fact, to reference the word “AI” alone generates a response from society. In 2021, among
executives of the world’s largest companies, those who discussed AI on their earnings calls, they
were 40% more likely to see their stock prices rise (Accenture, 2023). Society as a majority,
wants to have the technology that considers us an advanced civilization. However, the fear of
how this technology is what poses a threat to individuals.
6
When using critical analysis for personal goals, I feel that it leans more to the side of logic as
opposed to common sense. With that said, logically, evaluating pros and cons in my personal life
is essential to growth. Critical analysis helps determine the proper way to address a problem
based on facts. If I know that by taking a certain freeway to work is always jammed pack, using
critical analysis can make the difference of showing up at a location on time, or 30 minutes late.
Factoring the times, the days of the week, and events going on in a city is important to getting a
step ahead of what life can randomly throw at you.
I have always been known as an individual who was “tech savvy”. When I was only 9 years
old, I was running Microsoft PowerPoint for my church choir so that the words could show up at
the right time on the screen. The entire church would know when the choir started messing up on
the words, they would all smile because they knew that 9-year-old boy in the background was
having technical difficulties. With that said, I have always had a great respect for technology and
how it makes our life much easier, and more fun. However, before even enrolling into this class,
I have been noticing on the news about this new artificial intelligence. I didn’t quite understand
what all the fuss was about. We have had forms of AI dating back to the early 1950’s. After using
this class’s assignments, it put me in a position to further investigate exactly what modern
technology has in store. That’s where my perception of AI changed slightly, but even more so,
my perception on how political parties is trying to justify the fear. I’ve noticed that a political
agenda uses advancements, such as AI, to their benefit to keep people scared. A scared society
needs a leader.
I do believe that this technology will make individuals more self-sufficient in a multitude of
ways. I just think that relying on technology all together can be harmful to us as we forget basic
skills. As I speak about some of the potential harms in technological advancements, I am

currently using technology to benefit this paper. AI is correcting my mistakes by suggesting
words that I meant to say, or phrases I may have used incorrectly. The awareness of my bias
towards technological advancements does allow me to realize that I am actively benefiting from
this technology in real time. I also realize that technology is quite often used by me not only for
business, but also for my relaxation time. As soon as I am done with this paper, I will most likely
drink wine and indulge in the newest form of technological pleasure, the Xbox series x.
I think that it is important to study and be mindful of the new technological advancements
that are being introduced. By doing my own research, I am not able to be persuaded in any way
of how technology is supposed to help us or negatively impact us. I think it is important to do
your own due diligence to keep informed of the world around you. Understanding technological
advancements can help you one day at the voting polls. You never know what you could agree to
if you have no understanding through personal research.
