10/21/23 FCS2190 Research Writing Basics 2 1.) My initial thoughts about research when I started this class were that it was a process. A process that I honestly knew nothing about. I did not know much about research before this class. I still feel like a chicken with its head cut off when I read the book. Research is so rich and complex. It is delicate and there are so many research approaches. *I was a little confused when I read the directions, I completed 9 before I realized I only needed 5. I included them all anyway! 2.) Dichotomies- a.) Experimental vs. Field i.) Field approaches align more with how I think. Everyone is more ‘real’ outside of a controlled environment. I am a different person outside of work. I assume I would be a different person during field research than in experimental research as well. It is important to me when those around me in my personal life are honest and themselves. My home life is a natural setting while work is more of a professional setting where I have control to adjust my personality to fit those around me. Overall, in the field, you are more yourself because it is the real world, whereas in an experiment you are aware of where you are, what you should be doing, etc. You are more authentic in the field.
Mcleod, S. (2023, September 25). Experimental method in psychology . Simply Psychology. https://www.simplypsychology.org/experimental-method.html#:~:text=It%20is%20similar %20to%20a,control%20over%20the%20extraneous%20variables. b.) Deductive vs. Inductive i.) In my everyday activities, I tend to silently question those around me and what they are doing. I like to think that everyone has the best interest in one another but I do not think that is true. For me, Inductive approaches align with who I am and how I figure out what is important to me. I do not think everyone is dealt a perfect hand, nor do I think anything is guaranteed. Having the opinion to choose things is important to me, but what comes with options is uncertainty. With inductive approaches, you can make a generalization based on observations. With your generalization, you may not be right, however, you can make a new generalization based on a new observation. Bradford, A., & Weisberger, M. (2023, January 30). Deductive reasoning vs. inductive reasoning . LiveScience. https://www.livescience.com/21569-deduction-vs-induction.html c.) Subjective vs. Objective i.) I see myself as being a supportive and helpful person. That is why I am a junior preschool teacher in a low-income community. I want to help those around me. To help those around me I need to have feelings but it is also important to have facts. I believe that I mostly follow an objective approach. An objective approach refers to data-based information that is not biased. In my career, it is important to deny bias and remember facts over feelings. I am here to support everyone regardless of my feelings.
Overall, you can be both subjective and objective but it is important to remember that you must examine the environment you are in before you give a remark. In my professional work, it is important to be objective when helping families with their needs so they receive the best care, MasterClass. (2021, August 10). The difference between subjective and objective information . MasterClass. https://www.masterclass.com/articles/subjective-vs-objective-information-explained d.) Philosophical vs. Positivist i.) I as an individual love facts, when it is a fact the answer is clear. However, not everything can be a fact, sometimes you have to create an answer for yourself. As a child you learn a lot from your family, most of which you were told was probably true, yet sometimes it is a fact that your family made up. It is important to me that you have facts and ideas as an individual. It is important that you can make your facts for your ideas. With the philosophical approach, you love wisdom. You can seek truths. You can form your answers or learn how to understand someone else's way. Furthermore, to me, it is important to know the truth but it is also important to be able to find your own truths. What is philosophy? . Philosophy FSU. (n.d.). https://philosophy.fsu.edu/undergraduate-study/why-philosophy/What-is-Philosophy e.) Relativist vs. Replicable i.) In my profession, I am a teacher, a caregiver, and a friend. I do my best to serve those around me the best I can. I believe that everyone deserves to know the truth, how it affects them, and what to do about it. In my place of

work, it is important that the families I work with have replicable information, that is why I align with the replicable approach. I understand the relativist approach, however, for the families I work with it is important that I give them consistent resources that have worked for other families over and over again. The resources I give are local to them and support families like their own, if I were to give them something that I used that would be relativist to me, it would not work for them nor would it be consistent with my company's data. Miceli, S. (2019, September 3). Reproducibility and Replicability in Research . Nationalacademies.org. https://www.nationalacademies.org/news/2019/09/reproducibility-and-replicability-in-rese arch f.) Traditional vs. Behavioral i.) As a young adult, in her everyday life, I would say that I try to form my own ideas and thoughts based on my own findings and understandings. My own findings and understandings can change over time. I think that is okay to think one thing at one point and change your idea after a while if you have reasoning. It is important to me that I am allowed to think freely and share my ideas. With that, the traditional approach aligns best with my feelings. I am able to make my own decisions based on my own analysis. Sometimes a decision may be rational, but that is what the traditional approach allows you to be, you are able to make your own decisions based on your own benefits.
Behavioral vs traditional economics . The Chicago School. (2021, November 12). https://www.thechicagoschool.edu/insight/psychology/behavioral-vs-traditional-economic s/ g.) Empirical vs. Theoretical i.) I like to observe facts and ideas and question why those facts are happening. In my career. I need to be aware of what is happening around me to help and understand those I'm working with properly. I love helping people and I can do so by being theoretical. I align with the theoretical approach because I can create a theory that helps me limit the generalization of groups of people. I can take key variables and examine them to see why a phenomenon is happening. Being able to observe and then explain the facts allows me to help families in a way they understand. Organizing your Social Sciences Research Paper: Theoretical Framework . Research Guides at University of Southern California. (n.d.). https://libguides.usc.edu/writingguide/theoreticalframework h.) Phenomenological vs. Observational i.) I want to understand people. I want to understand how others view things versus how I view things. The world and those in it are so complex. To me, the phenomenological approach aligns more with my ideas. In my career, I must understand other people's lived experiences. Furthermore, I must be able to understand how others view things before I dive into research to help them. Something that works for me, may not work for them, and vice versa.
Qualitative Research Methods: Phenomenology . LibGuides at Duquesne University. (n.d.). https://guides.library.duq.edu/c.php?g=836228&p=5972144 i.) Ontological vs. Epistemological i.) I want to understand people. I like to be aware of my surroundings. For me to understand children in my career I think I align best with the ontological approach. In my career, and the overall world, it is important to understand children, and to understand them you need to pay attention to children. Furthermore, the ontological approach means you are concerned with how to understand the world and how you can better understand it. Just as I am concerned with how children live in the world and how they develop over time, my observations allow me to understand them over time. Ontology and epistemology . OpenLearn.
