1 Annotated Bibliography 1 Hayleigh D. McLure Dr. Jade Miller Rachel Warner CS-100-B6 Wilfrid Laurier University March 6, 2023
2 Topic Description: Within the 1950s-1960s Black activists used the radio to get messages to their allies in order to form meeting places, rallies, and spread information. This was particularly important for the Civil Rights Movement and many other political movements during this time. My topic will be diving deeper into the ways in which the radio helped empower these minority groups within this time and how it was a crucial media form in the fight towards equality. Research Question: “How did the use of the radio empower minority groups leading up to the Civil Rights Movement?”
3 Annotated Bibliography Baptiste, B. (2015). The rise of Black Voices on radio in New Orleans: The O.C.W. Taylor Effect, 1946–1948. Journal of Radio & Audio Media , 22 (2), 265–278. https://doi.org/10.1080/19376529.2015.1083156 Source Utility This journal highlights the ways in which Black focused radio/media came to be and how it was used within the post World War II and pre Civil Rights Movement. The text highlights important factors and dates in the journey to the Civil Rights Movement Source Reliability In my last assignment I found this author, Bala Baptise, who I have chosen to use again due to his understanding and work on this specific subject. He has his doctorate in Philosophy and is a professor at Miles College. Once again I looked at the publishing company which again I found they only publish scholarly, factual information. Block Quotation Baptise (2015) explained the following in this article: At the national level, the federal government created the Radio Education Project of the Office of Education in 1935, which urged the networks to broadcast Black-oriented programs featuring serious issues (Savage, 1999). The radio project employed Blacks who wrote scripts for programs such as Freedom’s People, a series exploring African-American history and culture. (p. 268) Paraphrase Within this time period the federal government in the United States created the “Radio Education Project of the Office of Education” which encouraged broadcasting companies to have Black-oriented programs where they would discuss serious issues. This design brought on and employed African-American citizens in order to educate listeners on the history and culture. (Baptise, 2015, p. 268) Summary The idea within this passage is that this was the beginning of the education of Black individuals and an attempt to end discrimination by explaining their culture. It was also a way of employment for these individuals and a chance to get their voices and stories out. (Baptise, 2015, p. 268)

4 Newman, K. (2004). Radio active: advertising and consumer activism, 1935-1947. Retrieved from https://hdl-handle-net.libproxy.wlu.ca/2027/heb08261.0001.001. Source Utility This book examines the ways in which the radio formation was helpful but could also be hurtful. It is important to look at both sides and understand the whole history of the radio and how it came to help minority groups Source Reliability When looking for this book I used Lauriers Omni which then brought me to the ACLS Humanities page. This page publishes scholarly Ebooks on social sciences and humanities. I further went to research the author, Kathy M. Newman who is an associate professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University. Block Quotation Newman (2004) describes what her book is looking for within researching the radio: Moreover, I wanted to see if a specific mass cultural form, such as radio, might have helped such radical social activity come into being. I wanted to explore the ironic and counterintuitive possibility that radio might have helped to produce the very consciousness among radio listeners which they needed to fight radio itself. Paraphrase The author wanted to examine how radio and other forms of media in this time may have assisted the “radical social activity”. She wanted to explore how the radio may have helped produce the consciousness needed to challenge the radio itself. (Newman, 2004, P. 2) Summary What I gathered from this section of text is that the author is looking to explore the ways in which the radio helped social movements but also was the cause of these social movements. (Newman, 2004, P. 2)
