Towson University Department of Computer and Information Sciences Assignment 2 (10 points) Instructions: This is an individual assignment. Use the blackboard to submit your word file with answers by 11:59 pm on the due date (no hard copies please). Late submissions will receive a zero grade. Start working on this early. 1. Describe the difference between serial and parallel transmission Serial data transmission is what sends data bits one after another which is through over a single channel. Whereas parallel data transmission sends multiple data bits at the same time though multiple channels. 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of parallel transmission? The advantages are that they have faster loading. It is high speed and can transmit N bits at the same time. It just basically offers faster data communication The disadvantages of are that it supports short distance communication between devices. As well as that it uses more wires compared to the serial interface and it is costly and harder to implement. 3. Which type (or types) of serial transmission is appropriate for video transmission? Which type of transmission is appropriate for a keyboard connection to a computer? Synchronous (no idle) is what is appropriate for video transmission. Asynchronous (idle) is what is appropriate for a keyboard connection to a computer. 4. What is a start bit, and with which type of serial transmission is a start bit used? Start bit is an extra 0 that is at the beginning of a transmission to allow the receiver to know that another character is currently being transmitted. This is used with Asynchronous (idle) Classification: Public Classified as Confidential
Towson University Department of Computer and Information Sciences 5. When using a synchronous transmission scheme, what happens when a sender does not have data to send? When a sender does not have data to send there is gaps between frames that are filled with a special sequence of idle bits. 6. If a customer intends to receive more data than they send, which forms of DSL would be appropriate? ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) because it is a technology that is used for communication of data. It helps the user download data at a much higher speed but is lower when trying to upload data. Classification: Public Classified as Confidential
