Tianna Fulmore Prof. Ikpeama FSCI 632 November 23, 2023 Module 5 Concept Application Travel documents and identity documents are the specialty of the Homeland Security Investigations Forensic Lab, and it is one of the most highly regarded crime laboratories in the country. From document fraud to child exploitation and terrorism, this lab is capable of handling all types of cases. The thermal ribbon analysis platform, otherwise known as TRAP, is a new lab instrument at the lab which I believe would be valuable for state and local laboratories. A used thermal ribbon is scanned and processed in less than two hours in this system to produce counterfeit driver’s licenses and identification cards. It allows the production of cards on any type of printer and generates a transcript of those cards. Due to its ability to apply federal sentencing guidelines, this system is extremely useful for forensic examiners. In addition, it is still unclear how accurate this instrument is in terms of detecting colors, as well as whether the thermal labels may fade over time. Since, “thermal ribbons can be stored for about two years before drying out and becoming unusable” (Stone, 2016). Additionally, it would also be helpful to know if there are ever times when the library becomes overcrowded. To help alleviate this issue, is there an exclusive database used by ICE? Researchers from forensic document examiners studied variations of reproduced questionable documents to identify distinguishing characteristics of robotic writing. To determine whether the documents were genuine, the examiners used the ACE-V methodology. Human writings were recognized by the examiners as distinct from the robotic equivalents. Therefore, “it
was determined that the Bond produced exemplars were nongenuine, due to the identification of unnatural writing and features” (Dumitra, Guzowski, Jean, Shaw, Warmbier, & Zippo, 2019). The effectiveness of forensic examiner's determinations still intrigues me after reading this article. In light of this, how can we explain the results found by examiners without a lot of experience or training, given their decisions are based on their training and experience? As an example, experienced examiners may make different decisions than new examiners.
