Go2Linux Memorandum To: Faster Computing I am pleased to hear that Faster Computing is interested in moving forward with the migration! This is great news. As all big changes come some questioning and I understand that most if not all users only know Windows OS. Please read below as I have provided some clarification on some of your most important questions about our recommendation. How will security be implemented in the Linux systems—both workstations and servers? Keep systems up to date to minimize risks, ensure timely fixes and make sure the user can understand the security updates, proactively track and investigate known security issues that may affect users . End users have expressed some concern about completing their day-to-day tasks on Linux. How would activities such as web browsing work? How would they work with their previous Microsoft Office files? Linux has several web browsers just as Windows does. One of the more popular ones is Firefox which works the same as it does on windows. For Office applications and files, users will still be able to view and edit these via the web-based version of office. Additionally, if stand-alone apps are required the application can be installed. The current Windows administrators are unsure about administering Linux systems. How are common tasks, such as STREET ADDRESS, CITY, ST ZIP CODE T TELEPHONE U WEBSITE
process monitoring and management, handled in Linux? How does logging work? Do we have event logs as we do in Windows? Linux has a system monitor built-in similar to windows task manager that will provide all the same details you are looking for. The same information can also be found through the command TOP. Log files are recorded just as they are on windows. They are mostly found in the rsyslog files. Some folks in IT raised questions about the Linux flavor that was recommended. They would like to see comparisons between your recommendation and a couple of other popular options. What makes your recommendation the best option? Other popular Linux OSs like Ubuntu offer a similar feature as Red Hat but each has its twist. For example, Red Hat has been around nearly 10 years longer than Ubuntu giving it time to mature and grow. Red Hat has more general uses than the competition to include cloud or hypervisors. Lastly, Red Hat is ideal for commercial use whereas Ubuntu caters more to the beginner user . How does software installation work on Linux? Can we use existing Windows software? Most software will be able to be installed directly on the machine as it would be with windows. In some cases where the software is not supported, there are applications to fix the compatibility or even have the software sit on a virtual machine and utilize it there in a worst-case scenario. How can Linux work together with the systems that will continue to run Windows? How will we share files between the different system types? File-sharing can be done in two ways. The files to be shared can originate on either of the two OSs and be set for sharing through the folder's properties. This can be explained in depth by one of our trainers if a visual is desired. 2
