Medjina Ilsaint IDS 2935 Activity 4: Browse the Center for Disease Control (CDC) websites: 1. For each of the agents we mention, give 2 interesting facts that you learned from browsing the CDC websites. Plague : In recent decades, there has been an annual median of seven confirmed human plague cases (ranging from 1 to 17). Small pox: Vaccines against smallpox are unavailable at this time since the disease has been eliminated and the virus no longer occurs naturally. Anthrax : It is possible for anthrax germs to become active once they get inside the body. The anthrax germs can grow, spread throughout the body, and make poisons when they are active. 2. Briefly summarize the anthrax bioterrorism event that followed the terrorism attack on 9-11-2001 In 2001, the U.S. postal service was used to send letters containing powdered anthrax spores. Twenty-two people, including twelve postal carriers, were infected with anthrax, and five of them died to it. Anthrax spores from such an assault might be easily spread by the wind or transported on people's clothing, shoes, and other personal items. Anthrax is highly infectious, and even a little exposure may spread to many people. 3. Worldwide what is one of the most recent examples of the use of bioterrorism (provide reference) According to the CDC, Salmonella is a category B bioweapon. The Germans employed it as bioterrorism during World War I, and the Rajneesh cult in 1986 used it to sway an American election by contaminating salad bars at local restaurants with Salmonella. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK570614/#:~:text=Salmonella%20is%20a %20category%20B,to%20influence%20an%20upcoming%20election .
