week 3 While listening to the video the era of blind faith in big data must end. I found it very interesting in Cathy’s examples of real-life situations for algorithms and data. Such as a simple meal being cooked in her home and being considered successful if the children eat vegetables. This is a very relatable example for me as thinking about what you’re going to cook each night really takes thought every night. So many aspects go into making the choice. Maximizing the degree to which samples and data are used to train or build algorithms are representative of the population is very important to eliminate bias from occurring in the data. As Cathy says we are the ones who are biased and put our biases into the algorithms. Our human bias then influences the data used to test hypotheses. We must consider many aspects and errors that may occur before selecting our sampling groups to give us the data we are looking for. Human influence is closely related to the programmatic theme of ethics. Human bias poses a threat to a person being ethical in making judgements about data and sample testing. A person may not even realize that they are biased towards a group of data, however this still poses threats to making ethical judgments. resources: Cathy O'Neil: The era of blind faith in big data must end | TED Talk
