GTQ342NMML FALL 2019 September 24 th , 2019 Mr. Ali Yeganeh c/o Seneca College, Newnham Campus 1750 Finch Avenue East Toronto, Ont. M2J 2X5 Dear Mr. Yeganeh, Sieve Analysis Test An analysis of the dry sieve procedure was performed on two soil samples (BOH101-SS2 and BOH101-SS3) that we received from Seneca College on September 17 th , 2019. The report was completed on September 22 nd , 2019. Seneca College provided 2 soil samples already air cooled and dried. Samples consisted of gravel, sand and silt/clay particles. Soil samples did not contain more that 5% fines. Therefore, no further testing is required. The provided samples were carefully examined and its grain size distribution (gradation) was determined. Detailed documentation for this lab report is appended to this letter.
GTQ342NMML FALL 2019 Lab Report No. 1 SIEVE ANALYSIS TEST Date: September 24 th , 2019.
GTQ342NMML FALL 2019 Lab Report No. 1 SIEVE ANALYSIS TEST Purpose The purpose of this analysis is to explore the relationship between a soil’s “grain size” and “percent passing” and analyze the grain size distribution curve using a prepared laboratory soil sample. Procedure 1. Measure and analyze 2 different samples for this analysis. 2. For this analysis, we obtained 247.7g of soil sample SS2 and 200.5g of soil sample SS3. 3. Pour the soil sample into the pre stacked sieve nest (largest to smallest). 4. Place the sample and sieve stack into the sieve shaker machine, secure the stack within shaker’s frame and shake for approximately 3 minutes. 5. Obtain the cumulative mass retained on each individual sieve and base pan. 6. Determine “percent passing” each sieve. 7. Hand plot the grain size distribution curve using recorded and calculated data. 8. Determined the percentages of Gravel, Sand and Fines. 9. Determine D 10 , D 30 , D 60 , C u and C c values. 10. Classify the soil samples according to USCS (MTO).

GTQ342NMML FALL 2019 Sample Description Sample BOH101-SS2 Angularity: No angularity (round particles) Largest particle size: 4.75 mm Colour: Light brown with some yellow particles MIT: SAND with some gravel and a trace of fines % Gravel – 7.03% % Sand – 92.73% % Fines – 0.24% USCS: SP – Poorly Graded Sand % Gravel – 0% % Sand – 99.60% % Fines – 0.40%
GTQ342NMML FALL 2019 Sample BOH101-SS3 Angularity: Angular angularity Largest particle size: 9.5 mm Colour: Light grey with some dark grey particles MIT: GRAVEL and Sand with a trace of fines % Gravel – 52.02% % Sand – 45.39% % Fines – 2.59% USCS: SW – Well Graded Sand % Gravel – 31.32% % Sand – 66.09% % Fines – 2.60% Concluding Statement Soil samples used for this analysis both have high % of Sand. Sample BOH101 – SS2 had uniform graded curve, whereas BOH101 – SS3 had a well graded curve.
