Discuss the components of the IDEA including FAPE, LRE, Child Find, Procedural Safeguards, and Early Intervention, and how these elements support students with disabilities. IDEA is a federal law that allows free appropriate public education (FAPE) for children with disabilities all throughout the nation. It also ensures special education and related services for all those children affected. However, there are qualifications that need to be met for a child to gain IDEA services; a child must have a disability and need special education to make progress in school (Lee, A. M. I. 2022). Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). No child or person should be restricted based on a disability that limits their learning. While FAPE ensures that education remains free and appropriate to those with such disabilities, LRE ensures that children or people with a disability have the same or just as much education as those children or person who does not have a disability. However, while LRE does mandate that educational services for students with disabilities be included in the general classroom, it does not mandate that every child or student with disabilities receive such services in the general classroom (Shepherd & Linn, 2014). According to Lee (2022), Child Find is where schools must look for and evaluate students who may have a disability and offer special education and other related services to help meet the student’s needs. Of course, procedural safeguards must be in place to protect and give the parents an opinion on their child’s education. Such safeguards can include consent from parents before a service is performed (Lee, A. M. I. 2022). Early intervention is where services provided under IDEA can help children who are younger than your traditional going-to-school age. It focuses on helping toddlers and infants reach developmental milestones that they may have difficulty reaching (What Is Early Intervention?, 2019). All of these elements go hand-in-hand to help support those students and/or children with disabilities. Such as Early Intervention to help infants and toddlers reach those important milestones and Child Find to identify those children who may have a disability and need help in learning once found and ensure they do that with peers who don’t have a disability. It can make them feel included and seen as a person who happens to have a disability, rather than a disabled person. Children are impressionable, especially at a young age, and to be able to see themselves in an environment that offers this education while not excluding them from other peers can boost ones self-esteem, at least I would hope. I know that I wouldn’t want to be excluded based solely on the fact that I have a disability, whether that be physical or mental. Who is eligible for services under IDEA? According to Lee (2022), children who are eligible for IDEA must fall under one of 13 categories. And while a child may have one or more of the disabilities listed, it doesn’t guarantee that they will be eligible for IDEA. They must have a disability
AND because of that disability, need special education to make progress in school. What is considered a disability? There are 13 disabilities that fall under IDEA: 1. Autism 2. Deaf-blindness 3. Deafness 4. Emotional disturbance 5. Hearing impairment 6. Intellectual disability 7. Multiple disabilities 8. Orthopedic impairment 9. Other health impairment (includes ADHD) 10. Specific learning disability (includes dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and other learning differences) 11. Speech or language impairment 12. Traumatic brain injury 13. Visual impairment, including blindness Provide an example of when a student is in need of an FBA, IEP, and a 504 plan. An example of a student who may require an FBA, IEP, and a 504 plan could be a child diagnosed with ASD, who hits themselves or peers who would need an FBA to help develop positive behavior interventions so that they may not hit themselves or others. This can correlate to the IEP, as it can help the IEP team determine if the behavior was caused by or related to the student’s disability. If it is related to the student’s disability, i.e. they hit themselves due to over stimulation in the class room, a 504 plan may be able to provide accommodations to limit the noise or stimulation within that classroom so that the student could be less likely to hit themselves.

Working in a physician’s office allows for attire that can be comfortable, yet professional for the setting. Scrubs are a big part of my daily clothing, with personalization such as my name and the company logo. Although not necessary, I do press or iron my scrubs so that they may look crisp and fresh in case I am to be around physicians. I do not interact with patients, as I am located at a facility that is not used for clinic use, however, we do have CEOs, COO, and physicians that are partners with the practice that come in and out of my office area where my department works. I feel it necessary to look my best because there are times when the CEO, COO, and physicians may stop by for an impromptu meeting. But as we know, attire is more than just what you wear. In the company I work for, there are certain restrictions when it comes to hair, makeup, nails, tattoos, etc. We can’t have any crazy hair colors, such as pink, blue, or purple. Only natural colors are acceptable. Now, while we can’t have crazy colors, in terms of look, I will admit that my hair is always in a messy bun. Luckily, I am not around patients so I can get away with having it a bit skewed.
