Social and Emotional Intelligence (SEI) Power Skill SEI Skill Sets Scenario Self-awareness Patience and recognizing strengths Having patience with patients and coworkers during stressful times encourages an accepting environment and one where mistakes can happen, but solutions are present for them. Being able to recognize your own strengths allows you to know that if someone else is struggling with something that is your strength, you can lend a hand. While if something is not a strength of yours, you can ask for assistance from someone who has your weakness as their strength. Self-management Resilience and time- management Resilience during difficult times is important for not only your mindset, but your entire team as well. Resilience improves morale, facilitates problem-solving, and increases mental fortitude. COVID is a perfect example of a time when resilience was necessary in making it through a shift. Time management is vital for healthcare workers, especially when it is busy and chaotic. Being able to determine what needs to be done first and how quickly it needs to be accomplished ensures patients are cared for in a timely manner and makes for a more efficient floor. Interpersonal communication Compassion and active listening Compassion is a common trait among healthcare
workers, and one that is important for yourself, your coworkers, and your patients. Having compassion for yourself during difficult shifts is important for your mental health, compassion for your coworkers when they are struggling and need help, and compassion for patients when they are at their worst and need a shoulder to lean on. Active listening is important in obtaining patient information during admissions, but also when they are sharing their thoughts and feelings. Such as when a challenging patient who is not cooperative with staff, sometime they just need someone to listen to how they are feeling and what they are thinking. Content patients are more active in their care and make for a better work environment. Executive function Planning and organizing, research Planning and organizing is essential to a smooth shift. You have a plan laid out to determine how to approach situations that are happening and that may occur. You are better prepared for emergencies, such as in codes, and how to handle them. You can streamline many processes and make things easier and more effective for patients and your coworkers. Researching information
leads to improved patient care. This causes decreased patient length of stay and increased patient wellbeing, as well as more efficient nursing care. Such as if a patient needs foley inserted, knowing and researching the most up-to-date method is important. Social awareness Empathy and perspective taking Having empathy is important as a nurse. Without it we are unable to make connections to patients and display the type of compassion they need, such as delivering hard news to a patient and their family. As a colleague it is important in forming bonds and understanding the feelings of the people we work with. Perspective taking improves relationships among staff and helps with conflict resolution.
