Verbal Communication
Introduction (Clear thesis,
reviews main points,
catches audience
attention)
Rating: 2
Explanation: I feel like his
introduction was slow to start, he
does mention Waren Buffet who is
well known, but not known by
everyone. It takes a while for him
to show any statists that may
catch attention. I initially found
myself bored with the
presentation. I was unsure of what
he was going to be speaking about
for the first portion of his speech.
Rating:5
Explanation: Jamie opens with a
shocking statistic to gain the
audiances attention. He also
intruduces himself in a clear
mannor and establishes why he
is pashionate about the topic.
He also clearly defines what he
will be talking about throughout
the speech. He has a clear call
to action.
Body (Clear main points,
evidence and details)
Rating: 3
Explanation: While he does use
great evidance and visual
enforcers during his speech, I
never understood quite where the
speech was going or the reason
for the speech until the end. The
points he did present were clear
and backed up by evidance.
Rating: 5
Explanation: His main points
were very clear and backed up
by facts and staticts and other
data. For each point he made
several subpoints that all
realated back to his main fact.
Conclusion (summarized
thesis, established what
speaker needs from
audience)
Rating: 1
Explanation: He did not
summerize the points he made for
his speech and the overall purpose
was still unclear. It did seem like
perhaps he was calling them to
continue being great in the field of
the education but I am unsure.
Rating: 5
Explanation: The conclusion of
his speech wrapped up and
reitterated the points of his
speech. What he needed from
the audience was clearly stated
and reitterated his call to action.
Delivery (Voice, speed)
Rating: 3
Explanation: I feel like his voice
was clear and he used appropraite
vocal afflicion during his speech.
He spoke at a good pace. He also
used humor thoughout the speech
to keep the audience engaged,
however nothing about his voice
stood out to me and made me
want to continue paying attention.
Rating: 5
Explanation: During his speech,
he used different vocal tones
and volumes to help make
points more clear and keep what
he was saying interesting. He
uses a varity of speeds while
delivering facts, but it was never
to quick or too slow.
He uses humor to keep the
audience engaged.
Non-Verbal Communication—You may find assessing the non-verbal
communication easier if you turn down the volume on the video to
watch.
Professional Appearance
Rating: 5
Explanation: He looked
professional and put together for
his speech.
Rating: 4
Explanation: Jamie took a more
laid back look during this
presentation, wearing typical
day clothing. However, I feel like
this fit in with his speech to a
point and worked to his
advantage. He was making the

Verbal and nonverbal communication plays a large role in the effectiveness of a
presentation. The TED talks presented by Bill Gates and Jamie Oliver, give great examples of
effective communication, as well as communication that distracts from their overall message.
Both gentlemen display very different communication styles that have given me insight into
effective communication that I may use during my presentation.
Bill Gates seems to use a clear-cut, factual, and calm demeanor throughout his speech in
both his verbal and nonverbal communication. Gates uses facts to wow his audience instead of
relying on dramatic vocal affliction or hand gestures. Throughout his speech, he keeps consistent
eye contact with the staff, speaks at an even pace, and with a clear tone. On the other hand, Oliver
is passionate throughout the entirety of his speech, using a variety of vocal tones, volume, and
well-thought-out clear gestures that serve to drive the point he is making into the audience and
give weight to his words. By doing this, he was able to keep the attention of the audience
throughout his speech.
Keeping the audience's attention was a clear strength of Oliver's tactic during his
presentation, he was charismatic and passionate about the information he was sharing. Gates
seemed to prefer a calmer tone for the duration of his speech, keeping the audience less engaged.
Eye contact was another factor that varied between the two men, Gates was able to maintain eye
contact with the audience for the duration of his speech and did not read from notes, indicating
that he knew and understood the information he was sharing well. Oliver seemed to struggle
when it came to eye contact during his speech, often looking at his visuals and points relying on
notes and taking his attention off of the audience. Both presentations offered strong visuals and
statistical information throughout their speech, as well as interjecting points of humor that served
to keep the audience engaged.

The fact that both presentations leaned heavily on visual aids indicates that they are a very
important part of audience engagement, and therefore, will be something I will incorporate into
my speech. Gates's ability to keep eye contact with his audience and knowledge of his material
are other inspiring factors for my speech, I want to maintain that contact with my audience and
give the impression that I am an expert on the material I am presenting. Lastly, I want to bring the
passion and energy that Oliver displayed into my speech to keep my audience engaged and
interested in what I have to say.
Eye contact, energy, material knowledge, and visuals all seem to play a large role in the
effectiveness of a speech. For my speech to be as effective as possible, I plan to incorporate these
techniques into the material I am presenting. I will use both gentlemen's TED talks as inspiration
to effective and clear verbal and nonverbal communication with my audience.
