Heather Hickman Busi300-D25 Prompt: Provide at least two ways graphics can be used to increase the effectiveness of a presentation and two ways graphics can hinder a presentation’s effectiveness. Presentations are a commonplace and heavily utilized tool in most places of business, even their earlier methods of conception like the whiteboard and flip board are still in use today. Effectiveness is the goal when creating and presenting a presentation. Graphics have become a way to enhance the points within the presentation and in turn make the presentation more effective. There are, however, guidelines to follow when choosing graphics in order to make sure they are effective and not hindering the presentation’s effectiveness. Basic guidelines when choosing or designing graphics for your presentation are that the graphics serve one of “three purposes: to clarify, to simplify, or to reinforce data” (DuFrene & Walker, 2020). Keeping your fonts and colors consistent in your choice of graphics will enhance your presentation greatly aesthetically as well as keeping the information within the graphic in an easy to read flow between itself and the written text of the presentation. Consistency helps keep the graphic easy to understand and honest, avoiding visual distortion of what is being presented. When not following the guidelines of graphic design use and design, visual distortion occurs. When looking at a graphic one perceives “psychological and informational effects” (Mohamed, 2021). If visual distortion occurs as the graphic is inconsistent with the message and flow of the presentation, the wrong message is delivered leading to dishonesty within the presentation and potentially causing the presentation to perhaps become unethical. Presentations should be enhanced by the use of graphics. When used and designed in an ethical and consistent flow along with the presentation’s information there is less chance that it
will hinder the message with dishonesty and visual distortion. The goal is always to use graphics in such a way that they clarify, simplify, and reinforce your message in a positive manner.
