Session Three: Business Research Report
Businesses will always have issues or problems that need to be solved. Sometimes, these
problems are simple and inconsequential, and sometimes, they are addressed immediately and
concisely. This week’s writing assignment is to give an example of a business problem and
provide a problem statement that I would address in a business report, give three different
methods of research I would use to find a solution, and then justify my choice of solution.
The company leases the office I work in, and the lease ends in two months. Company
policy requires having a physical location for confidential documents and company equipment.
Rising costs of real estate and office rent is a continually growing problem in the area where I
work. Even though I primarily work from home remotely, I am also in charge of the inventory of
the office; finding a solution for the office lease has been handed down to me by my Regional
Director. The current plan to find a solution has been whittled down to two options: Renew the
existing lease with the office we currently have or find a new office space in the area.
Guffey & Loewy describe Primary and secondary sources: “Primary data result from
firsthand experience and observation. Secondary data come from reading what others have
experienced or observed and recorded.” (2019). The first research method I used is a primary
source of company records of the existing lease for the office we currently occupy. The office
has been leased to the company for a few years and was renewed before; knowing the changes in
the lease agreements when renewing could be beneficial when selecting a solution. The second
method of research I used is interviews, which is a secondary source. I consulted with the
Regional Director about the lease and their opinion on the problem as the other regional offices
go through this process as well. The third method of research I used is Digital Resources, which

is a primary source. Finding a different office space through online services could be beneficial
as there could be cheaper alternatives for office space in the area that suit the company’s needs.
My recommendation is to lease a different office space close by that is smaller in size,
having fewer people physically working in the office reduces the need for a large office like the
one we currently occupy. Leasing a smaller space also reduces the monthly overhead for the
office, making it easier to get approval for moving the office; renewing the lease for the office
also came with a cost increase that was typical judging from the previous lease renewals, making
it the least favorable option. Lastly, the new office is closer to all of those who would need to
access it for supplies, copies, and file storage, making it not only the cheapest option but also the
most convenient option for the whole office.
Having confidence in solutions can make a difference in whether it is successful or not;
the research done beforehand is the primary driver of confidence in my recommendation. This
situation isn’t dissimilar to what Elijah did in 1 Kings 18:23-24: “Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s
prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not
set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. Then you
call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by
fire—he is God.” Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”” (2011), Elijah gave this
challenge to the Prophets of Baal because knew that God is the one true God, much like having
the facts of the research completed needed to back up the recommendation I gave.
