TEMPLATE FOR D078 TASK 1 SUBMISSION
Task 1: Organizational Structure
A. Describe an organizational structure you would select for the consulting business in the scenario by
doing the following:
1. Chosen Organizational Structure
(A1)
Describe the main features of one of the following organizational structures that would meet the needs of the consulting business and explain how this structure applies to the scenario. • functional • divisional • matrix • teams The structure that would best meet the needs of the business would be functional structure. This would be best for the consulting business because the organization is divided into smaller groups, which would allow employees with similar skill sets to work together. Since the organization is divided, it allows for fixed roles and responsibilities to be established; therefore, allowing communication to be better streamlined. By hiring employees with similar skill sets, it allows partnerships to be formed and increase the clarity of communication and ideas. Functional structure
also allows employees to gain experience and move into higher positions within the company- decreasing turnover rates and create a more sustainable organization.
2. Chosen Organizational Structure and the Four Factors
(A2) Using the chosen organizational structure described in part A1, explain how each of the following four factors works within the organizational structure selected for the consulting business in the scenario: • functions or departments
• chain of command
• centralized or decentralized • level of formality
Functional structure could be used to support functions because it would allow employees to work together and report up to one manager. It also reduces the duplication of work since they would be working in the same department; therefore, increases innovation. After assessing the sustainability of the 30 businesses, generating feedback and discussing with stakeholders allows them to be more confident and secure in their investments. Having a chain of command clearly defines roles and responsibilities for each person, including management. Everyone within the organization would know who to approach for any type of assistance or additional resources, leading to stronger partnerships within the organization. By seeking investors that would like to take a leadership role, it establishes the chain of command and allows the decision-making to be made clear by leadership.
A functional organization would perform better with a decentralized structure. By allowing department managers to make decisions, it increases the teams input to assist in making decisions and sharing different ideas to better benefit the organization. Stakeholders are able to generate feedback to assist with the development of the consulting business.
The level of formality should be very formal to allow standards to be specified and documented. Standards that are provided would provide clarity to the organization as to who does what and their
responsibilities. Being a formal organization would assist with brand reputation and structure. Hiring
three part-time university students to assist with developing an organizational structure would also allow standards to be developed and established.
B. Organizational Structure Aligned with Organizational Theory
(B)
Describe one of the following organizational theories and explain how it can be used to support the organizational structure described in part A1: • scientific management • bureaucratic • administrative • neoclassical • modern • contingency/situational The theory that would best fit the organizational structure would be the bureaucratic theory. Functional structure allows groups to be broken down, which allows those of similar skill sets to work together. It also means that they would have their own fixed roles. Since individuals would have their own fixed roles, it maintains the structure predictable. There would also be fewer managerial levels between management and employees – allowing communication to be more effectively distributed amongst the team.
C. Describe how an organizational structure can impact the effectiveness of the consulting business in
the scenario by doing the following:
1. Organizational Effectiveness of Chosen Structure.
(C1)
. Using the goal-approach model of organizational effectiveness, describe how the organizational structure selected in part A1 can impact the effectiveness of the consulting business in the scenario.
Functional structure would effectively impact the operative goals of the consulting business. Employee and management performance would be effective since employees have fixed roles and the mission would be the same, regardless of roles. Since employees have similar skill sets, it would increase the rules and expertise within the organization – allowing innovation and brand recognition
to take place. Receiving feedback from stakeholders allows for the development and implementation of the consulting business to take place; which would increase probability and market share. Seeking investors in the business community that would like to take a leadership role would also assist in decision-making and bringing new ideas to the consulting business.
2. Comparing Organizational Effectiveness.
(C2)
Using the goal-approach model of organizational effectiveness, explain the advantages or disadvantages of using one of the organizational structures from the list in part A1 that is different from the structure already selected for the consulting business. The second organizational structure I am choosing would be teams. One advantage of using this structure would be using their complementary skills to inspire innovation within the organization. Working together on a specific project would also allow for an increase in communication and partnerships to be formed within the organization and community. It would impact the goals 2
positively – increasing teamwork and performance to meet operative goals. Profitability would increase with the organization’s efforts and leadership, guiding employees to think of ways to make positive changes to the organization.
