OL 600 Suzette Sutton Dr. David Fountaine October 25, 2023 Module Six Journal: Self Analysis Behavioral Competency – Interpersonal Cluster Strengths: One area of strength in the Interpersonal Cluster for me is Relationship Management which is defined as “the KSAOs needed to create and maintain a network of professional contacts within and outside of the organization, to build and maintain relationships, to work as an effective member of a team, and to manage conflict while supporting the organization” (SHRM, 2022). The sub-competency within this section that I would consider a strength for me is relationship building because work hard to maintain strong relationships in both my professional and personal life. I strive to develop and maintain mutual trust and respect with colleagues and friends and always demonstrate concern for their well-being. I have a reputation for being a good team player that people can talk to and help them resolve issues. Another area of strength for me within the Interpersonal Cluster is Communication which is defined as “the KSAOs needed to effectively craft and deliver concise and informative communications, to listen and address the concerns of others, and to transfer and translate information from one level or unit of the organization to another” (SHRM, 2022). This area became a strength for me as I recently completed my BA in communications. Through my
assignments in my program, I learned how to craft clear, organized, and effective messages that are designed for the intended audience using appropriate terms and vocabulary. Additionally, I strive to practice active listening to empathetically understand others’ points of view and concerns. Areas of Opportunity: Two areas of opportunity for me are Negotiation and Conflict Management which fall under the sub-competencies within the Relationship Management competency of the Interpersonal Cluster . Throughout my life, I have always been one to avoid conflict as much as possible. For example, in my previous position as a massage therapist at the Bellagio in Las Vegas I had an issue with a co-worker who consistently left the massage room a mess and instead of speaking to her about it I always did the extra work myself just to avoid a conflict. Since completing my degree in communication which included courses in management and leadership, I have become better at speaking up when necessary and I look forward to growing more in this area throughout my current degree program. Another area of opportunity for me within the Interpersonal Cluster is a Global Mindset which is defined as “the KSAOs needed to value and consider the perspectives and backgrounds of all parties, to interact with others in a global context, and to promote a culturally diverse and inclusive workplace” (SHRM, 2022). While I fully believe that we are all part of the human race and that equality is a human right, I know that I have much to learn regarding how to help create a workplace environment that is inclusive and respectful for everyone.
Strategies for Development: One strategy for developing my Global Mindset is to continue to reduce or eliminate any implicit biases that could prevent me from creating an inclusive mindset. This can be done through implicit bias training to help me identify and overcome any biases that I may have. Also, as mentioned before, I plan to obtain a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Certification after my degree program to continue my education in this area. A second strategy for developing my Conflict Management skills is to take a Managing Difficult Conversations course in my program which will help me grow in this area and also to read The Conflict Resolution Playbook by Jeremy Pollack to gain practical communication skills to help with conflict resolution.
