Introduction
After performing my interpersonal communication assessment, the area of my choosing was communicating using technology. This was not randomly chosen; it was chosen because this area
was my lowest score in the interpersonal communication skill assessment test.
This area is a challenge.
Using technology is a specific aspect of interpersonal communications that showed my most significant need of improvement because it has been my challenge for a long time. Loading videos is a less-than-desired struggle that I face in my everyday life. Communication on camera is a challenge that I have struggled with ever since I was in elementary school to date. This will be a challenge, but reading in the past weeks and submitting myself out of my comfort zone has been the key to overcoming this communication skill.
How to overcome the challenges
Different technological approaches were executed. I had Zoom meetings and 4-way Teams calls with colleagues from other work sites. I have Facetime and include combined calls with my family and some friends who understand my exercise. I got more familiar with these platforms and am confident with the apps. I mastered the essential functions and now can easily navigate the platforms. I set scenarios that could challenge me and went straightforward doing them to facilitate my navigation with the menus.
Tools and advice
The only tools I can provide as advice for any of you is to treat the challenges one at a time and engage each level of difficulty with a positive attitude and the will to learn and become proficient
in the areas of challenge. Finally, you do not have to reinvent the wheel; search for assistance and download videos of ways others have tried to improve and learn all the tips on performing the skills. Bevan(2020) argues that accepting oneself is the ultimate step towards improving interpersonal communication. This is achieved by knowing our strengths and weaknesses and accepting who they are. I learned that technology can be as confusing as we people can be; with preparation and training, we can get everyone to take advantage of the open world of technology that mostly sits at our fingertips. Our text states, "Verbal communication is the primary currency in our digital interaction with others" (Bevan, 2020). It shows that the need and accuracy of interpersonal communication influence our daily lives.
Conclusion
Concluding this experience, I realized the importance of our necessity and dependency on effective communication in the workplace and the need for digital media in our day-to-day lives.
