Module 2 Discussion
When I think of diversity I would usually just think of different cultures, races, and genders that live together. Since doing the readings and watching the videos in this course I have come to realize how much diversity influences a person’s everyday life. I can name off the explicit biases that some of my family have that I do not agree with. I can understand why we should view a person biased on their personal experiences and not just how we perceive them because our own implicit biases can influence our thoughts and actions.
I had never heard of intersectionality before this course, and it confused me at first. But from what I understand is that it is how collectively your different identities combined affect your oppression or discrimination you may face (PLEASE correct me if my definition is not correct). Learning about intersectionality has made me think of how I should be more aware of others to be more aware of my own biases.
1. What insight do you appreciate in your peer's discussion of bias and/or intersectionality?
2. What contribution can you make to your peer's discussion
regarding bias and/or intersectionality?

I like your explanation to recognize that biases exist so you can become more conscious of your own beliefs. Keeping implicit bias from being an explicit bias and then in turn as you said working town promoting diversity and inclusion.

I agree with you on acknowledging our unconscious biases to combat its adverse effects. I think it is important to take the responsibility and find out what our biases are and change how we may
respond or react to certain things.
When I became pregnant, I was working full time as a Business Administrator at the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsula’s. I thought that I may have been able to return after my federally required 12 weeks of FMLA was up. That thought was stopped by the realization that our family would not be able to financially afford for me to return. The cost of childcare outweighed my income. I had started breastfeeding my daughter right after she was born and had
to supplement with formula as well due to my lack of supply. Shortly after the birth of my daughter I had to return to the hospital for a week for surgery due to complications from my cesarean. I had almost given up on breastfeeding. It is draining, mentally and physically. The benefits and that I believe outweigh my own discomforts though. I will be focusing my paper on breastfeeding. A population that I can concentrate on would be low-income mothers. They may face may obstacles such as lack of support, affordable childcare, and lack of paid maternity leave.
