Reflection: Meaning Making and New Literacies
Introduction
In our modern-day world, the landscape of literacies continues to evolve and expand
(American College of Education, 2017). It is essential for our students to develop the necessary
skills to thrive in the present and future, both within and beyond the confines of their education.
These 21st-century skills encompass a range of literacies, including but not limited to
communication, visual comprehension, digital fluency, and critical thinking (American College
of Education, 2017). By cultivating these literacies, students will not only be equipped with the
ability to adapt to the ever-changing demands of future professions, but also possess essential
qualities such as effective verbal communication, collaborative teamwork, exemplary leadership,
and much more (Main Department of Education).
Throughout the duration of this course, I have had the opportunity to delve into new
literacies and actively apply them in an integrated unit centered around the subject of apples.
Within these lessons students are encouraged to revisit and build upon their prior knowledge,
seamlessly intertwining it with new discoveries and insights. This deliberate approach fosters a
comprehensive understanding and paves the way for continued growth and development. The
students should have an understanding of apples, all the topics intertwined, and new literacy by
the end of these lessons.
Communication Literacy
In these lessons the students have a lot of opportunities to to practice communication
literacy. Communication literacy is the ability of one to be able to relay their thoughts and ieas to
someone else and also understand what another person is sharing.
Visual Literacy
One literacy my integrated lesson included was visual literacy. Visual literacy is the
ability to understand visual art such as picture, videos, and other images (American College of
Education, 2017).
