Know the definition of paradigm. A distinct set of concepts, theories, and postulates that constitute a philosophical framework. A system of beliefs, ideas, values, and habits that is a way of thinking about the real world. Be able to identify an example of direct communication. Understand how the 2015 Supreme Court ruling changed opportunities for gay and lesbian couples. Know what research tells us about language use in most/many 3rd generation immigrants. Be able to discuss the concept of "Zero Tolerance." Be able to describe examples of front stage and backstage racism. How do we learn values early in life? What is the result of conflict resolution skills being taught in public schools? What do we know about interpersonal communication? What do Christian religious groups in American have to say about heterosexism? Do they all agree? What happens during an “avoidance rationalization?” Know the difference between “exceptionalistic perceptions” and “universalistic perceptions.” Exceptionalistic is the perception that focuses on individuals; all problems are local, unique, exclusive, and unpredictable. It views issues as distinctive cases . For example, if someone believes that their personal success story is entirely due to their unique abilities and circumstances. Universalistic views social problems as systemic, originating in flaws in the fundamental social structures within a community o r society. Emphasizes commonalities, patterns, and underlying causes. It acknowledges that individual experiences are shaped by broader forces such as culture, institutions, and historical context. For instance, recognizing that poverty isn’t solely an individual failing but can result from systemic issues like economic inequality and lack of access to education reflects a universalistic perception. Using a historical lens, how was diversity viewed in an educational setting? Using a historical lens, how was contraception viewed in America? Know the differences in language learning and applying as it relates to being a non-English speaker. Are there people who would like to make English the official language of the United States? If so, why?
What is a truth about gay and lesbian relationships regarding love and sexual promiscuity? What defines someone as homosexual? Understand the definitions of and differences between: prescriptive beliefs, descriptive beliefs, attitudes, and values. Understand Kimmel’s levels of cultural awareness. What happened to women in the workforce during WWII? Be able to define and apply the term sexism. What is happening regarding birth rates of white Americans versus non-single race white Americans? Know in what domain (if any) boys are likely to experience gender equity issues. Know when (decade-wise) a bulk of the research on gender identify occurred. What is the term for male and female role interchangeability? Be able to identify the three different types of racism. Be able to identify the components of prejudice. Are we controlled by our prejudices? Why or why not? Explain the steps and give an example of how a personal belief may lead to a behavior.
