Where in the text do you identify the author’s position on the subject?
The author stated their proposition by stating the importance of having the right to have your classified information removed from the internet. It is as important as having freedom of speech as a right. According to the author, “Freedom of speech is a right in this country; the “right to be forgotten” is really a privilege, which we need to cultivate ourselves. But we should recognize that it is one we deeply want in this brave new Internet.
How can you paraphrase the writer’s position? The author posits that attaining privacy and the right to feel secure and safe within the space that you cater for your individualistic endeavors should never be violated for any reason whatsoever. And that anyone should have the liberty to remove any personal information that they have on the internet.
When you consider the author’s audience, purpose, and point of view, what bias or prejudice do you see?
The author properly addressed the importance of online safety and privacy. They also put emphasis on the issue of the internet mobs’ complete disregard of someone’s personal identity by sharing sensitive information, via non-consensual posting or gaining access through their data by force, on the internet platform. However, after thoroughly analyzing the text, the author showed bias by selecting
stories to support their side of the argument. The author’s proposition focused on
asserting that the Right to be Forgotten to be of equal standing as the constitutional right of Freedom of Speech needs careful deliberation—one that should require empirical research and void of biases.
How does the author’s bias affect your understanding of the text?
The author’s bias in the text did not deter my understanding of the content at hand, rather it created a gateway for me to look further and see the bigger picture
of the issue. Blog articles are not reliable sources of information, nor should they be the means that will shape our acquisition of educational knowledge. With this discretion, the understanding of text regardless of biases should warrant utmost importance. And should be practiced for practical utilization articles and pieces of media.
Where in the text does the author appeal to logic, the author’s trustworthiness, or
the reader’s emotions?
-
The author appealed to logic in this excerpt: “Commenting and sharing both
amplify the reach of a scandal, though commenting may sometimes offer a veneer of support. Despite their detrimental effect, however, commenting and sharing represent a taking on of responsibility: the participant asserts agency
.”
The author appealed to logic by adhering to reasons and elaborating the importance of how a person’s act of sharing and commenting can be considered an act of support. -
The author’s appeal to trustworthiness is present in the text: Looking, for me, is ethically knottier. The power dynamic is certainly the most unequal here: the looker has complete privacy, while the subject of the photos has been robbed of hers.
The author appealed to trustworthiness by sharing her perspective—which gives the reader a glimpse of her position in the argument. -
The author appealed to the reader’s emotion in this excerpt: What happens
when one part of the self is made to stand in for the whole, and magnified for millions of people around the world?
The author appealed to reader’s emotion by utilizing rhetoric to invoke a sense of empathy.
How do the appeals affect the writer’s argument?
The use of appeals makes the overall argument more convincing and appealing to the author’s target audience.
How does the text’s imagery, metaphors, word choice, sentence variety, or other rhetorical devices help the author convey ideas to the reader?
The various elements of speech and tools helped the author achieve their purpose
of conveying their claim in a compelling narrative. The utilization of these tools and elements augmented the author’s argument by providing clarity and comprehensible form of argument.
Why is the author’s argument valid or invalid? Why would someone agree or disagree with the author’s argument?
The author’s argument is valid in some aspect. As the text put emphasis on the pervasive issue of sexist culture and distinct set of standards placed on women both in real life and internet. These biases often result to the lack of consideration
towards women’s privacy and the immediate disregard on women’s right to privacy and safety. Moreover, the article highlights how violation of privacy does not only limit itself to hacking someone’s personal account without consent. But it
also includes the act of sharing and commenting on these private images, thereby violating someone’s privacy. The disagreement lies on the argument whether the Right to be Forgotten (RTBF) should even be compared to Freedom of Speech. This comparison between two opposing principles can cause disagreement because RTBF itself contradicts the constitutional right of Freedom of Speech. The RTBF does not only diminish the internet’s credibility as a source of information, but it also denies people’s right to
have access to public information.
