Describe at least two pre-reading and two post-reading strategies or learning activities teachers can use to assist elementary students in developing their awareness of sounds and print and to facilitate conversations about books and stories. Rationalize your choices. The development of awareness of sounds and recognition of print is a vital part of students being able to carry on conversations about books, which will also help develop their daily vocabulary. Two pre-reading strategies that will aid in this would be Word Maps; they help students “develop their understanding “ of words (Classroom strategies, n.d.). Teachers place the targeted word in the middle and in boxes or circles around the word other words or phrases that are examples of the work also the definition of the word is located in one of the surrounding boxes. This strategy prepares the students for what they are about to read, and they are approaching it with better understanding. Another pre-reading strategy would be Rhyming Games. They help students develop Phonological Awareness and allow better recognition when they can create a connection between words. The teacher should also continue to enforce and facilitate development with post-reading activities. Two post-reading activities would be Word Walls & Summarizing. Word Walls will provide students with “a permanent model of high-frequency words” (Classroom strategies, n.d.) & provides a constant reference they can always look back on as they write and thrive. Leading to Summarizing, it’s important to provide students with the opportunity to be able to summarize and carry conversations about what they just read; this is an active display of the student’s comprehension about what they just read and allows the teacher to become aware of any possible gaps. Also, summarizing teaches students to “take large text and reduce them to the main points” (Classroom strategies, n.d.). Reference Classroom strategies. (n.d.).
