Research Paper: Digital Strategies for Online Church Ministry Ken Davis CTG: Church Ministry in the Digital Age CLCM540_B01_202220-Liberty University Professor Steve Lowe February 23, 2022
Introduction This week research is about a digital ministry strategy to accomplish the missional purpose of an online church ministry. Interconnecting, last week research with this week research, we reveal the general framework for this online church ministry by explaining how the ministry develops its structure into a digital church online. We will develop a cluster of digital church ministry strategies that demonstrates how to carry out ministry using the platform and a digital design focus on: (1) Technology, (2) community, (3) digital tools, and a digital process. Let’s take a look at how technology is defined and administered in this strategy. Technology Technology is the component of the framework on which most ministries focus, many times to the exclusion of all else. 1 Schuurman argues that technology actually encompasses a broad range of human activities. 2 The first technological activity the ministry needs is a post- website. A post-website differs from a traditional website. Bourgeois argues that he is not sure when this happened but there has been a move away from the organizational website as the primary way that people interact with organizations. 3 The HUB is not looking to become another traditional website, but a digital ministry development Centre that can accomplish the missional purpose of Christ in an online church community. The internet is the largest and most efficient digital avenue in the world. A website allows an entity to become accessible to the online community. Thompson argues that our ever-expanding 1 Bourgeois, David. Technology. networks are going to push us to rethink the boundaries of the church local and universal. 4 Then, a post-website allows a digital ministry development Centre to build a non-traditional digital community. Let’s see how the community is built. A Digital Online Community The first thing an online church should do for its community is setup social media accounts. 5 Social media and technology is here for a while therefore using digital tools like, hashtags, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn apps are the new ordinary. McIntosh argues that bringing glory to God is the church’s ultimate goal and the highest work for his people. 6 For example, Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness (Matt 10: 1-42). Technology does not demise nor hinder the moving of the Holy Spirit throughout the world. The focus on a digital community is the management of different platforms. Adding various platforms to an online community is relatable to many cultures. What is even better is having digital tools [app] connected to the social media platform is priceless. Digital Tools A websites is how you communicate with others. 7 What about communication with communities around the world? There are two ways we would like for the post-website to be structured: by a .com and NFC & QR Code. For instance, have you sat at a restaurant and notice 4 Thompson, Deanna A. servers not handing out menus? Most restaurant menus are now contactless NFC & QR Codes. Similarly, we envision a post-website for a digital church online community. We would like to utilize the NFC & QR Codes as access to the digital church online community. Once a candidate scan the NFC & QR Code it will take them directly to the community. Immediately, the site opens and the candidate is connected to the post-website. The NFC & QR Code is a digital tool that can help develop a digital church online. NFC & QR Codes can be used to patronize the candidate by asking to download the church digital apps. Bourgeois argues that the primary use of digital tools is now relational, not informational. 8 Next, automated set and forget. Automated Set and Forget Last week we addressed the ease-of-use automated, set-and -forget streaming structure. The ease-of-use automated, set-and-forget feature eliminates the need for many volunteers. What makes the ease-of-use automated, set-and -forget streaming structure effective is the use of the NFC & QR Codes. For instance, after scanning the NFC & QR Codes the digital church online service times, any time online streaming, and community is available. Thompson argues that it is apparent that more attention needs to be paid to the ways digital tools are already enhancing people’s lives in concrete, embodied ways. 9 Jesus sent out disciples commissioning them to teach, preach and baptize. Similar, officers will be empowered for online church while leaving ordination to the sanctuary. Officers In each church plant established, each officer is responsible for maintaining a functional website. The focus of a website is to identify your ministry, communicate with others, and build a community. Kranda argues that if you consider yourself an online church your website should 8 Bourgeois, Getting The Stream, 23. 9 Thompson, Incarnational Living Enhanced by Virtual Reality, 65.
possess streaming of live worship service, social media, and digital experience options. 10 In contrast, Bourgeois argues that in reality, most ministries spend less time on technology and more on people and process bringing a better chance of success. 11 The HUB’s website will be designed to address both the needs by the commissioning of officers. For instance, tithes and offerings. Tithes and Offerings The Bible is clear that the house of the Lords is to be supplied with whatever is needed to reach a community. In Numbers 31:51, the soldiers would give the gold from the spoils of war and give it to the priest. In return, the priest would offer prayers for their service, take the money a purchased what was needed for the sanctuary. Also, the people would give a tithe off their land so the sanctuary could fulfil the great commission to the poor, strangers, and guest. Similar, digital church online would take of the gifts, offering, tithes, donations and render equal disbursement to the physical church plants. In Summary From these past seven weeks, we explored the implications of how to characterize technology. In week one we mentioned, technology is a systematic treatment of expressions shaped by human will and encompasses a broad range of human activities. 12 Week two, we constructed a biblical and theological rationale for online church ministry around the concept of the interconnected (virtual) body of Christ. Steve Lowe argues that our concept of the body of Christ means that an incarnation approach to church values the gathered church over the 10 Kranda, Jay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK5skx9GE0U&t=46s. 11 Bourgeois, Technology, 53. 12 Ibid., 13-4.
scattered church; and a local church over the universal church. 13 Week three, we exposed the general framework for an online church ministry and engulfed it into an online digital church scenario. This week, we combined the prior weeks work to demonstrate a digital ministry strategy to accomplish the missional purpose of an online church ministry. Bourgeois argues a measurable result is one that can be determined by looking at statistics. 14 Bibliography Bourgeois, David.
