1 3-2 Activity: Research Presentation Southern New Hampshire University IT-226-J7201 Comm in STEM Professions Tiffany Vancil 3-2 Research Presentation
2 1. Create a presentation that explains what your area of interest is. In your presentation, do the following: App development to increase Neuroplasticity of all ages. 2. AREA of Interest : Neurology or specifically Neuroplasticity (new app to practice at home, live and recommends facilities to try to enhance) 3. Pose your specific research question on one specific, current issue in your field of study. How can Neuroplasticity help people? Sub questions-Dementia, ADHD/Autism, every day. (Worry and fear) 4. Interactive model of communication Opening Slide: Does anyone remember the song head shoulders knees and toes? When my children were little in order to save money I worked with the 18 months to 2 year olds at the daycare my kids went to in Norman Oklahoma. The teachers there were put through early education classes offered by the University of Oklahoma to be able to be the best teachers to the children that were enrolled into the daycare. My preceptor that I was shadowing was from Japan and knew just enough English to get by. She had taught the children sign language and the song head shoulders knees and toes but in Japanese. Which I thought was super sweet. I did not realize then as to how the simple skills and lessons learned there would help shape the developing brains of the children until I began working in the neurology field and I learned what the brain was comprised of but mainly how it learned and functioned through Neuroplasticity. 3 Slide:3 What is Neuroplasticity? neuroplasticity ,   capacity   of   neurons   and   neural networks in the   brain   to change their connections and behavior in   response   to new information, sensory stimulation, development, damage, or dysfunction. (Britanica, 2023) Per this definition speaks on the fascinating way the brain is capable forming new connections. For example, every time a person learns a task such as cooking, riding a bike and writing, the brain forms a neural connection. The brain does this to be able to access the information or task processes quickly and the more times that an activity or lesson is done the stronger or the more the connections develop. So, practice does make you perfect. The brain can develop even more connections for already learned tasks such as brushing your teeth. We usually brush our teeth with our dominant hand. When you brush your teeth holding your toothbrush with the opposite hand your brain makes more connections on how to complete the same already learned task now in a new way. Our adaptable brains make more neuronal connections to complete the teeth brushing task. It may not be perfectly brushed the first time but with enough practice or enough connections you can train the brain by making more pathways to be able to use either hand to brush your teeth. These connections are what make the brain become stronger or faster at retrieval and learning a multitude of things. Slide 4 Doing many different activities like exercising and learning to play an instrument has been shown to help with developing a brains’ way of learning and processing more efficiently. (How Musical Training Shapes the Adult Brain: Predispositions and Neuroplasticity.   Frontiers in neuroscience ,   15 , 630829. 2021) Neuroplasticity training is beneficial for everyone to do.

4 Research has shown that doing simple brain training can help to keep neural connections strong and keep the Neuroplasticity of the brain as we age. According to an article that was published in the National Library of medicine several Neurologist and neurosurgeons have researched that the more plasticity a brain can keep back decline and even be beneficial for people who are suffering from Neurodegenerative diseases such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons. ( Targeting neuroplasticity in patients with neurodegenerative diseases using brain stimulation techniques., 2020) Simple apps like a Neuroplasticity trainer can help to continue keeping the connections in our brains strong. Slide 5 There are other types of similar apps that are out in the market but are geared towards adults without any issues. The app development will be simple for users from toddlers to the oldest of demographics by utilizing all the five senses for an interactive learning/training experience with music and colorful visualizations. There will also be a meditative wind down period just like after any other major workout. The app can have set reminders for training, sleep schedules, food, and hydration. As well as training, we can develop an algorithm that formulates the data of the users’ progress, levels of completion time, and incentives to keep training and increasing the happy Dopamine levels flowing. The app can also suggest specialist facilities that help in certain diagnostics and treatment of certain cognitive issues regarding the previously stated Neurodegenerative problems along with more specific behavioral issues such as depression, learning issues and Autism. Slide 6 Slide 7 In conclusion the children at the daycare, just like many other children at school, were developing a vast number of neuronal connections through music and play. These activities such as playing, moving, and learning are things we should never stop doing. I know I learn
5 much faster when I’m having fun. In developing an app that is interactive and fun I believe we would be able to increase the brain Neuroplasticity of many people and slow down the decline from neurodegenerative diseases. Slide 8- Thank you.
