D090 Task 2 A. Identify each of the following elements described in the scenario: • Maria, a 13-year-old teenager. Because of her father's job, the family has relocated, leading Maria to observe increased conflict between her parents and experience heightened stress and anxiety as a result. • Maria and her family recently relocated from a diverse metropolitan area to a small, rural town characterized by a predominantly white, middle-class population. Standing out due to her appearance and style, Maria faces ostracism and ridicule from her peers, who mock her and even create a hurtful social media page titled "I Hate Maria." • Maria is biracial, with an African American father and a Hispanic mother. Her distinct cultural background sets her apart in a predominantly white community that lacks diversity. B1. As Maria's teacher, upon being informed of the concerning behavior within the school, my immediate response would be to notify the principal, school counselor, and other required faculty members. Without divulging specific details about Maria's situation, I would initiate discussions with the students to raise awareness about the harmful effects of all types of bullying and the lasting trauma it can inflict. Upon identifying the individuals responsible for creating hate groups, I would promptly involve school authorities and communicate with
their parents to address the issue and consider appropriate legal actions. Our school has a zero-tolerance policy in place for such things and is strictly enforced. a. As Maria's teacher, to approach her situation with cultural sensitivity and trauma- informed care, I would prioritize building a relationship based on trust. Collaborating with the school counselor, I would offer Maria a supportive space where she feels safe and valued, encouraging her to openly share her thoughts and concerns. By involving the principal and school counselors, Maria can feel reassured and protected, fostering a sense of security and openness to receiving the necessary support and assistance. 2. I would engage Maria's parents by arranging a parent-teacher conference either in person or via phone/video call if attending school in person is challenging for them. During this meeting, I would inform them about the bullying incidents Maria has been experiencing and emphasize the importance of acknowledging and addressing her feelings seriously. I would reassure them that we are taking proactive steps to support Maria, including involving the school counselor and addressing the bullying behavior. Following the initial conference, I would provide Maria's parents with my contact information and encourage them to reach out if they have any further questions or
concerns. I would also commit to checking in with them regularly to provide updates on Maria's well-being and progress. This ongoing communication ensures that Maria's parents feel informed and supported throughout the process of addressing the bullying situation. C. Discuss two specific elements of your own cultural background. 1. My background is very similar to Maria. I am a Hispanic male that moved around a lot due to my father's work. I was a military brat and attended 12 different schools throughout my life. I too have faced my challenges with bullies due to the way I dressed, my skin color, the way I speak, my accent, the home, and cars that my parents had. It wasn't easy but I can fully relate to Maria's feelings. Having personally experienced many of the challenges Maria is facing profoundly influences my approach to addressing her situation. This shared background cultivates a deep sense of empathy within me, enabling me to understand Maria's feelings and struggles more intimately. Drawing from my own journey, including therapy sessions and consultations with specialist teams, I have firsthand knowledge of the positive impact such interventions can have. This familiarity equips me with the ability to discern signs of
