Week 1 Objectives: 1. Differentiate between the graduate and undergraduate academic experience. 2. Locate components of the online learning environment. 3. Identify personal motivation for pursuing a graduate degree in secondary education. [InTASC 9(o)] 4. Locate resources within the GCU Library online database. 5. Use various methods of citing information. 6. Create an APA style reference page with a variety of sources. 7. Discuss the value of building community through collaboration. Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge May 11-11, 2023 1. Which weekly objectives do you have prior knowledge of and to what extent? 2. Which weekly objectives do you have no prior knowledge of? 3. What course-related topics would you like to discuss with your instructor and classmates? What questions or concerns do you have about this course? 1) I understand that when you are a graduate student, there is a higher expectation that your course work is more research-based and when possible, real-life experiences in the field will also contribute to your understanding of what you are learning. I am confident with my online learning skills since I have experienced teaching both hybrid and full online classes during the pandemic. Though my experience is from a teacher’s perspective, the expectations are the same as needing to check in regularly and respond to discussion posts. I can say that almost all kinds of LMS have the same features, so I find it easy to navigate. When it comes to using the school’s online database, my counselor has been supportive and shares a lot of useful tips, so I just need to put them into action. 2) I won’t say I completely have no prior knowledge about using various citing methods or using APA style, but it has been ages since I last used it, so I need some refresher on that. Coming from a foreign country, I do need to learn more about the educational system in the US and all its aspects. 3) I would like to learn more about building community through collaboration. I have attended some PDs related to it, but it would be interesting to learn more about it from a student’s perspective. I currently have no questions or concerns now.
Topic 1 DQ 1 May 11-13, 2023 Using the components in your course (Forums, Announcements, Calendar, Student Success Center, etc.) Why it is the responsibility of an online learner to know the components of the digital classroom? Discuss the benefit of being present and part of the weekly discussion in the forums. Even though distance or online learning has been around for quite a while, the pandemic made it more in-demand for all levels of learners. With the increasing capabilities offered by different technologies around, more learning resources and platforms have been used to deliver education and make it more accessible to everyone. Thus, the learners are expected to be more proactive, accountable, and engaged in their learning. Because of these expectations, it is the learner’s responsibility to get himself familiar with the LMS which should not be difficult as they all look alike nowadays with the same important features – discussion forums, announcement boards, list of resources, and some more. Physical and live interaction may be missing in an online setting but through consistent and meaningful discourse, the classroom feel gets recreated. Being a teacher, I always expect my students to be in my classroom so they can learn and be successful. With a digital classroom, the learner’s presence through active participation in weekly discussions is as important as being inside the classroom. As a student enrolled in an online graduate school, it is important that I devise a plan of how I can keep my online presence active. To keep up with the class expectations, I need to check the calendar for deadlines, the discussion board for topics being talked about, the student center for reliable resources and support that I need to be successful in this endeavor. With my active online presence in the digital classroom, I can enhance and maximize my learning experience and that of my classmates.
Topic 1 DQ 2 May 11-15, 2023 Why do you suppose collaboration is so highly encouraged in education? How would collaboration build community within your secondary classroom? For the number of years that I have been teaching, I have never once had a pair of students, classes, or cohorts that are the same. Everybody is different in all sorts of ways, which means everybody has something unique to put on the table. I believe this is one of the reasons why collaboration is highly encouraged in education. You may learn with a specific set of ideas or materials; but, to make learning more meaningful, a learner needs to extend his grasp and be open to other resources available. Students in my classroom may be of the same age or from the same community, but everybody’s experience and background are different. Through these differences, I design learning activities that can cater both to their needs and what each student can offer. These differences make up a diverse collection of insights and experiences that the members of the class, including me, can learn from. Goulet, Krentz, and Christiansen (2003) mention that when collaboration is successful, it is a powerful way of working together and making a change in education. The authors emphasize how the work of a collaborative group creates both product and process outcomes that have the potential to change the understanding and actions of the individual and the group. In his article, Paterson (2021) quotes The Christenson Institute researcher Chelsea Waite when she said that classroom collaboration not only enhances academic learning and social and emotional skills, but also develops students’ social capital. These words are manifested in my classroom when I assign collaborative activities - the shy ones learn to get comfortable with sharing their ideas or working with others; the disruptive ones, when given specific roles, step up their game and take their job seriously. Through collaboration in the classroom, I would say that my students feel seen, heard, and valued. Similarities and differences are always present in members of any group. This is evident within the classroom because students, and even teachers, come from diverse backgrounds. Cultural practices, personal beliefs and biases, and even language may serve as potential barriers when collaborating. Goulet, Krentz, and Christiansen (2003) say that collaboration is challenging because the human element of social interaction plays a huge part in any collaborative project. They also mention that conflict is to be expected and must be dealt with respectfully and constructively. I believe that such conflict can be addressed through candid conversations, open-mindedness, and conscientious trust in each other.
