Unit 3 discussion 1
Response to levy
I like the way you set this up Levi. It is well thought out and sounds like a good research topic. I
like how you put time limits on the brainstorming sessions. Project Plan
My project is focused on the impact of social media on the non-profit sector.
Research Question
How has social media impacted business communication?
Interviewees
* Co-workers
* Employers
* Volunteers
* Social media experts
* Communication educators Interview
T
he interview will kick-off with an ice-breaker. To break the ice I will inform the interviewee of the timeline, format, and of course thank them for their participation in my study. Then an explanation of my interview expectations will follow. Informed consent will be addresses and the
interview will proceed with a personal story. This story will be brief, but one from my own personal experience as a police officer. This will aim to make the interviewee feel comfortable with me, the situation, and build trust. I hope to make the interviewee feel that I am open-
minded and knowledgable to incite the best results.
I will move forward with generative and directive questions. These will aim to reflect on their motives, others motives ,and generate specific information needed for my study.
Questions
*
How did you view police as a child? Have those views changed? Why?
* Why do you think people do not trust police?
* Do you think police officers are able to relate to the community? How so?
* Are police officers skilled communicators? Why? Why not?
* Within our city, do you think police officers present a sense of reliance during encounters with the public?
To conclude the interview, the participants will again be thanked. Their confidentiality will be reassured and I will ask for any additional input that might be valuable to my study (if time allows for this).
Focus Group
My focus group will take place in a community recreation center conference room. This will allow both officers and citizens feel comfortable. It will last approximately 60 minutes, include 6-
9 people, and I will bring a field note recorder with me. I plan on utilizing a fellow officer for this task. They will be able to watch, take nots, and provide more input on the group dynamics.
Focus group participants will consist of police officers (patrolman), police officers (supervisors), citizens, community leaders, and communication educators.
I will initially greet the group, thank them for their participation, and introduce myself. I will present any ground rules and a tentative timeline. Confidentially and informed consent will be addressed.
To stimulate the group, and generate later discussion, I will show a small video clip. The video will relate to police communication skills. Next, a few questions will be asked to open up the dialogue and I will tell a brief a personal story.
Questions
*
Do you think police are trusted in our community? Why? Why not?
* Why do you think some people do not trust police?
* Are police officers skilled communicators? Why? Why not?
* How could police officers communicate to build more trust with you?
* Within our city, do you think police officers present a sense of reliance during encounters with the public?
I will conclude the focus group by sincerely thanking the participants for their input, time, and support. I will ask for any additional thoughts, concerns, or questions. I must keep in mind that some of the participants may present some challenges during this meeting. I will prepare for those that are too vocal, not vocal enough, emotional, negative, and or overly opinionated. I will throughly prepare by going through my interview guide, and script, until it is perfected.
