You must be present in-class to participate in the discussion to get credit for this assignment. Step One: Watch the video link in class: WARNING: ADULT SUBJECTS DISCUSSED IN VIDEO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He3IJJhFy-I Step Two: Answer the following questions : (You must answer all of the questions to get full credit.) 1. Why do people from previous generations have difficulty understanding the importance of social media to the current generation? a. When they grew up, they didn’t grow up with cellphones and the internet. They explored and would spend all their day outside. In order to build someone’s image it would have to be in person. 2. Why does the current generation have difficulty understanding the perspective of parents who did not grow up with social media? a. Because that’s all we know. We have been born into a world where social media is the norm. People make personalities of themselves and jobs on social media. Its much like why parents don’t understand why people don’t go outside as much anymore because that’s what they were born into. 3. Based on the video, do you think that there is more danger from online interactions than dangers that are prevalent in society when children/teens use social media? a. Yes. Online interaction allows people to feel more protected and more say what they might not say in person. Its especially easy to make an anonymous page and do whatever you want without anyone know who you are.
4. Have you ever experienced anxiety that comes from comments that others have made on your social media account? a. No. I don’t use social media to post my life and my business online. The only reason I have Instagram and Snapchat is to keep up with my friends but I don’t post so no one can comment on mine. But if I did, I probably would get anxiety from what people would say about me. 5. Based on video content (use concrete examples): What are the advantages and disadvantages of using social media as the main way to communicate with others? a. Connectivity: Social media allows individuals to connect with friends, family, and peers regardless of distance. It makes communication easier and helps maintain relationships. b. Expression and Creativity: Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok allow users to express themselves creatively and show their talents to a global audience. c. Cyberbullying: The anonymity provided by social media can lead to cyberbullying, where individuals are harassed, intimidated, or bullied online. d. Mental Health Impact: Excessive use of social media has been linked to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, particularly in young users. 6. Based on video content (use concrete examples): What are the advantages and disadvantages of using face-to-face communication as the primary way to communicate with others? a. Non-Verbal Cues: Face-to-face communication allows for the exchange of non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and gestures, enhancing the interaction. b. Personal Connection: In-person conversations often lead to a stronger personal connection, as individuals can sense emotions and build trust. c. Time Constraints: In-person meetings require physical presence, which may not always be possible due to busy schedules. d. Geographical Limitations: Face-to-face communication is hard for people who don’t live relatively close together. 7. How can parents and children, teens and young adults communicate better with each other to bridge communication and understanding for the benefits of having social media access and the benefits of not having social media access? a. Effective communication between parents and children regarding social media involves creating an open space. Parents should educate themselves on the positive aspects of social media, while children should understand the potential risks. Parents can monitor responsibly and respect.
